72 402 block/heads casting numbers
Hello everyone,
I haven't posted in sometime, but I have some questions after searching the forum and the web that only this forum can probably answer. I have a 402 rebuilt .30 over short block casting#3969854 two bolt main caps, that i got from CL a few years ago. It has dual front casting numbers 854/512. 3693512 being either 1969 - 427 or a 1970-76 - 454. I'm going off Mortec's numbers, it has been machined so the deck numbers are gone. I have heads that came off the engine I pulled from my 72 C20, it's stamped as a 3999290 block, but the heads are dual stamped too. 3999241 but has both 292/241. 6272292 are for 1970-78 - 402-454 so says mortec? Both heads, block and intake manifold are cast from 1971. Any info is greatly appreciated, thank you! Casey Last edited by Cali72K20; 03-16-2023 at 12:34 AM. Reason: edit |

Re: 72 402 block/heads casting numbers
The question i have is, do I keep everything together as it came out?
I'm waiting on the local machine shop, which is out about 2-3 months out to even look at the block to see if its worth saving. ~or just have them disassemble and check what i have (short block, heads and all necessary hardware) and just run it as is? Thanks in advance, Casey Last edited by Cali72K20; 03-16-2023 at 12:44 AM. Reason: add pictures |

It was just supposed to a simple head swap. The machine shop laughed when he saw the how the deck was stamped...Never seen that done on a truck block before, only corvettes, ground against the grain wrong font and stampings. It ran before I tore it apart.......

Being a 71 can only be a 402 or 454....

Re: 72 402 block/heads casting numbers
Machine shopped laughed at what?
Themselves maybe for their lack of knowledge! Normal suffix code on the pad. TKX is a 72 402. Casting number is for a 72 402. Definetly from a truck as no other info would be on the pad. Serial numbers didn’t start being added on the pad until 73. |

Re: 72 402 block/heads casting numbers
The 241's are decent heads. Get a bore gauge and check the cylinder walls, if they're good and the main & rod journals look good, I'd put it together and run it. A Comp 268H with a set of lifters, it has a mild lope at idle...
