nv4500 5th gear removal from rwd trans

mid 2000 nv4500 rwd chevy transmission. How do you remove 5th gear from the main shaft. Ive tried using a gear puller with an impact gun, heated up the speedo tone ring to the point of discoloring it and I still cant get the darn thing to budge. Im I missing some sort of lock ring or pin on this thing.

Torque King has a great website with lots of info.

Looks like they have different countershafts throughout the year of production.

They also have U tube videos.
I hope this helps.

Sometimes only the factory tool will work. However the speedo ring may be holding it.
When it doubt Heat the heck out of it. No temper in the ring so go for it.
A Ox-act torch with a rosebud will make more heat differential and may help.

Likely some other parts that go with this tool pictured below. I'm betting the speedo ring is holding it.

Check the 14 min mark of the video.
I can tell you if you watch it it will likely just make you angry as his slides off?
Of course his is a 4x4 and doesn't have the speedo ring.

Some other stuff to watch:

Another excellent video.

Will likely need a new shaft and gear seems 5th gear coming off is a bad habit of these transmissions.
Seems no way in heck 5th is sliding of in your case!
5 Gear is inexpensive (under $45) amazing. You can also get a 5th gear kit with the new shaft and gear.

Use RedLine MT-85 oil as it excellent replacement for the factory stuff which I can't find anymore.

Cheers

More heat did the trick. It was still a bear to remove.

I finally got the whole trans broke down, man this was a bad idea. Lots of carnage, broken 3-4 shift fork, 3-4 shift slider is destroyed, syncro keys in the bottom of the case, burned up syncros The chewed up input shaft should have been a warning.

Re: nv4500 5th gear removal from rwd trans

I plan on swapping out the th400 in my '88 gmc dually. The 454 runs good but the trans was not shifting well so I parked it a few years back. Its to nice to sit and I would rather have an overdrive trans. I bought a tractor so now i really do have a need a tow vehicle.

May be too late or not your choice preference but I would be redoing the TH400 in the truck and update it with some beefy parts....

A well built TH400 is a dream to drive....

Just my 2 cents worth
