"thrift air" switch on dash

I see that LMC sells a "thrift air" switch and a plate to cover the HVAC knob area. I am currently installing an economy heater in my 65. Trying to figure out how the thrift air switch and cable works. My understanding is that the know allows you to switch on the fan at different speeds and you can pull/push it to actuate a cable. Would that be something I could direct to push/pull the defrost on the economy heater?

It looks like a lighter duty heater core. Its smaller than the others. That's what I take from it
