67-72 Frame ID? ( 1/2 ton, 2WD)

I've done a number of searches and summarized what I found. I am by no means the expert here, just trying to put a list together. If anyone has anything they can add, Confirm, or more importantly, correct, please let me know and I'll update.

I plan to go look at a couple SWB frames and wanted to have an idea up front what to look for in an attempt to ID the frames as to what years they are. Needless to say the first thing I'll look for is the partial VIN stamp, but other than that, WHAT ELSE is there to look for?

My plan" I currently have a '68 LongBed C10 that I plan to convert to SWB. I will be installing drop, disk spindles, lowering springs and converting to 5lug axles (4.75 pattern).

Questions:
1.) With the radiator support mounts, what specifically is different from 67 and 68, ..and 69-72?

2.) For a '68 C10, converting from LWB to SWB (noting I will be swapping out spindles) will all year frames (67-72) be equally compatible?

3.) I know the SWB wheelbase measurement is 115" (LWB is 127") but on a bare frame, where specifically would this be measured?

3.) Realizing limited pics, but based on the photos below, (I don't know the VIN# stamps yet), what year frames do you see? (Assuming both 6 lug)

I am interested to know this as well because I have a 72 frame and I am putting a 67 front clip on it

I went the opposite 70 truck put a 68 frame under it. The only difference I found was the radiator support brackets are flush with the top of the frame on your 72. The 67 will be lower then the top of the frame. I had to make sure there was a dimple in the frame for the steering box . You won't have to worry about that using the newer frame. That is all I found cab mounts might be different on a 10 and 20 frame. Mine were both 1/2 ton and were the same. I looked I don't have a pic available of the front of the frame figures. Hope that helps.

If it matters my Fremont California built 67 short fleet has The VIN stamped in two places on the frame: next to the steering box and below the Rocker panel on the driver side. The frame is not dimpled for the Power steering box.

...still wondering what's different about radiator support brackets on a '68 frame.

Pretty sure you will find the 67 and 68 core support brackets on the frame are the same. They use the same mounts and core supports.

Aparently there are plenty of early 68 frames that are not dimpled for power steering.

Another difference you will find is the width of the top of the frame on the passenger side in 67 was wider because big block was not available. Discussed Here - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=784551&page=2

I'm pretty sure most of them have the last part of the VIN in 2 places on the top of the drivers side frame rail. By the steering gear and under the cab.

I will update the following:

- 67/68 Core support brackets (could be) the same, smaller holes than 69-72.
- Early 68 frames may have no PS dimple.
- VIN# stamp in two places, near PS pump and on DR frame side under cab
- 67 frame wider PASS side top (Big Block not yet available)

Were you able to complete this chart? I'm looking for the differences between a K10 frame and a C10 frame. In the 'yellow' box in the original post, you mention the differences between the two. Perhaps this post has gone quiet, but perhaps you have more information.

This was a very good link, Mr. Tennessee. Thanks. I've got my frame down to nothing and sitting on sawhorses - i'll figure out a photo to add to this, and the other post. It's definitely interesting to see the curves in the frame where the coils would sit - mine is a K10 so the frame is straight there. Good post.

C10 2WD came standard with rear coil springs, however leaf springs were an option.

The partial VIN is in two places, as:

The LH frame rail’s top is stamped in two places with the year (1), factory location (Z) and the VIN’s serial number. One is between the carrier bearing cross member and front exhaust hanger. The other is in front of the motor mount platform. .

Also, FYI

The RH frame rail ‘s exterior wall is stamped 3987552 – 572 and 4-23-26, located behind the front cab mount, on my 71 SWB 2WD
