68 ignition switch change to a 69+ ??

I have a 68 c10 Panel and I have a question about the ignition switch. My ignition switch does not have an accessory key position, which is what I read was correct for a 68. I'm slowly going through and changing out all of the old electrical parts and can't seem to find a specific switch for a 68 (with no Accy).

All the switches I've seen are listed from 67+ are the same. Do I have to run a switch without an ACCY key position? or can I get one of the 69+ WITH a ACCY key position? If so, will the 69+ ignition switch ACCY key position even work?

Re: 68 ignition switch change to a 69+ ??

My 68 truck has an ignition switch with the accessory position, and I believe the switch and wiring are original. I was under the impression that only 67s didn't have accy. There are several 67 features that are sometimes found on early 68s though, so maybe this is the case with your ignition switch. I'm guessing you could just replace your ignition switch to get the accy position.

Re: 68 ignition switch change to a 69+ ??

Well that might explain it. Some casting numbers found on various parts (flywheel, heads, block) suggest that it was made in late 67 for the 68 model year. Maybe they used up parts untill they were gone. Thanks.

My truck was in the Jun/July 1968 stream in Fremont production, so not very early.
OK, thanks. Good to know.

I mean it works fine on ignition. Headlights is another switch in another thread.
But I think you got it OK.

My 68 was built in Fremont in the May/June 1968 time frame (156XXX VIN). My radio, heater and wipers work with the key in the ACC position. The 1968 owner's manual does not appear to mention the ACC position.

My first 3 VIN digits are 123xxx. June/July was a guess.
I was going by the block dress numbers on my 292 [original block, rebuilt after 25 years in a crate, when I put a block out of a '67 K/20 Forest Service stepside] F0627XAE is the dress # on my original L25 block.
F0626UH is the number on my forest service surplus block. I had assumed they were a year-and-a day apart.

I have to turn the key to 1 o'clock for the IGN-ON devices to work. Like Heater and Wipers. When I had a radio, it was set up so I could play it without the key being on.
Did a PO modify your electrics? Are the Side Markers reflectors-only, or do they now light up?

Anything is possible, but I believe it is the original wiring harness. My side markers are reflectors only.

Re: 68 ignition switch change to a 69+ ??

I just deleted Posts #4 and #9 because my information was wrong.
My '68 C/10 Stepside DOES have the ACC function in the IGN SW. I just never noticed it.
Today I rolled the key to 11 O'Clock and the heater fan came on. So the accessory switch function does work on a '68. I can't say if that's Factory or because I put on a universal 68-72 ignition switch in 2005, when I pulled an overhaul on the engine and cleaned up 37 years of cheapo JC Whitney accessories, CBs, scanners, fans, Radar detectors, extra cigar plugs, coffee makers, etc. Every thing non-OEM went, even the cassette stereo and amplifiers. I had to resolder the main junction splice [10 ga Red] in the underdash harness, and I replaced the ignition pigtail and switch.
Then it worked like a charm. Go figure.
I also found the Build Date Thread. That showed Fremont production VIN dates of 11/67 = 8Z115xxx and 8Z135xxx = 2/68. So it's possible the June 27 date on my 292 block is June 1967, not '68 as I'd supposed. With a VIN of 8Z123xxx my Orange Stepside could be 12/67 or 1/68. I lost the built sheet about 20 years ago. It was just a jigsaw puzzle in a brown envelope and it disappeared from my desk.
So I learned a couple of useful things.
