So my younger brother decided to walk the PCT. 2600 miles. From the the MX border to the CAN border. He is on mile 600 or so. He started in early May.
He asked me if I wanted to go with and I said I walked enough miles in the army with a M60 but no.
He seems to be enjoying the trip. Sending videos home.
Any one else on the forum done this?

I have never done anything like that but it sounds like a lot fun.

That sounds like 100% torture to me. Every aspect of it. I admire people with that much energy, determination, and plain old chops.

They would find me dead of heart failure 20 minutes after I started. Make that 10 minutes.

Even if I jumped in a Uber and said take me to Canada that would be enough of a chore for me.

Exercise is like Kryptonite to me. Good luck to your brother. He must be in good shape to even try. God bless him. Safe travels.

I never had made that hike, but I have done extensive hiking. When it's at your own pace and through the most natural settings there is no chore to it, no comparison to a military march. You are walking in God's garden, often the most unspoiled lands. You see how the world is untouched by people (mostly). You can get a sense of the time before we arrived from Europe. It's a great feeling to see what you can do when it is all you. Just imagine, walk from Mexico to Canada, by a series of shorter walks. People got spread all over the world by walking.

I just gotta ask,, how does your brother dress for this long walk.. ? Micheal Jordan shoes or does he wear old worn shoes and clothes so not to look like he has money on him..

He has some pretty high end hiking gear. Light weight stuff. Per him the PCT has towns along the way that cater to the hikers for re-supply and such. He has a SAT phone so if he or maybe another hiker has trouble. He also has a can of the baddest bear spray available for two or four legged critters.
6 months prior to his trip for practice he would walk with his pack 14 miles to another town for lunch and then walk back. Yeah he's in good shape.

No doubt on a trip like that you’re bound to run across lots of things. That would make a great video documentary if you ran a gopro.

He will have a lot of people greating him when he gets into Oregon as there are town after town that cater to tourists even though he walking .. ..I have been to about each and every ocean town on the Oregon Beach . mention to him to be sure and stop and eat some of Mo's Clam Chlouder..lots of places have it .. it's mighty tasty ..California has some great little wayside towns too , but the Oregon Coast holds the best ocean views out of the 3 states that border the Pacific Ocean as a whole .. I came from Oregon about 45 miles from the Sea..before moving to Idaho

He is running a gopro and can attach it to some kind of stick so it looks its a low level drone. He will post on youtube when he is done and can edit it. Should be interesting.

The Pacific Crest trail is in the Cascades mountains.
I have been on it several times.
Only once for overnighters.
That's some hard core hiking. Lewis and Clark style.

I may try the PCT if I ever finish the Appalachian Trail. Really want to bike the Great Divide mtb route first.

Was going to mention this is what the trail is actually called in case someone wanted to search and get more info. A lot more hits this way.

Good on your brother. Its one of those things I talked about when younger but now Im older and Im pretty sure I would die haha. Being a long time talker gets you out of all sorts of stuff =)

Pacific coast highway on a motorcycle, hell yes. I'd do it again. Anything involving walking? No thanks. Maybe mountain bike it....

There's three of these well-known north-south trails. The Appalachian trail on the east coast, the Pacific Crest trail on the west coast, and the Continental Divide trail straight along the rocky mountains. The third one is the most challenging.

A 'triple crown' hiker is someone who has completed all three trails. A 'calendar year triple crown' hiker is someone who has hiked all three trails between jan-1 and dec-31 of a single year.

Very cool. I have a buddy in Tennessee that has done the Appalachian Trail and 1500 miles of the PCT. He has some interesting stories and says the same thing about the AT. Small towns along the trail cater to the hikers.
