Just the bed

Getting ready to start buying supplies to paint my new step side bed.
Any help on quantity of materials I'll need?

I'm buying a gallon of paint just so I have it if I need it for a something later on.
Would I need a gallon of epoxy primer?
Gallon of clear?
Should I put high build primer on the epoxy primer?
It's not a show truck so I plan on buying everything from Napa since they matched my paint and it came out perfect.
Already rattle canned my rear bumper and it matches great.

Just looking for estimates so I don't buy a bunch of stuff I don't need.

Re: Just the bed

Are you gonna remove the EDP coating?

Re: Just the bed

My fleet side bed with the exception of the tail gate was all aftermarket.
I was lucky enough to have a local body shop "let" me do all the sanding prior to paint.
I scuffed the EDP and then sprayed epoxy primer. Then we sprayed high build primer and block sanded it looking for low and high spots. Low spots we skim coated with filler and sanded until the low spots were gone. We did this to the outside only. On the inside we just scuffed the EDP and epoxy primed.
I would take your pics down to a local body shop and ask them their opinions on which materials and how much you will need. I bought all mine from the body shop. They buy in bulk and know what works with what. Good luck.

Re: Just the bed

I put high build primer on even new GM body panels if you don't you might regret it. The high build will hide smallest imperfections

Re: Just the bed

The only substrate deserving on epoxy primer is bare steel. It's useless tp put over any other coating as it is designed for bare steel corrosion resistance only.
If you don't plan on sandblasting your parts, scuff the EDP with red scuff pad, then paint it.
Don't buy a gallon pf paint or clear unless you plan on painting the entire truck at the same time...it won't store well and the activators go bad in a short period of time too.

You might consider asking your local body shop to paint the parts for you... might not be any difference in price once you consider all the products you are considering purchasing.

Re: Just the bed

Thanks everyone, for some reason I don't get email notifications when someone posts here even though I have that option selected.

I already bought all the supplies and just need to finish checking that everything lines up one last time on the truck before I take it apart and assemble.
I did buy a gallon of base, mostly because I want to get a cowl hood in a month or so and figured the paint would be good until then.

I did get epoxy primer/base and clear, everything I see doing a search on EPD panels says to use the epoxy and when I asked on multiple C10 groups on facebook they all said to use it.

Getting close, hope to start this weekend.

Re: Just the bed

Then why post a question here if you're not going to read the replies?
Perhaps the S10 group is better for you after all.
Cheers

My question was quantity, how much primer and clear just to cover a step side bed.
And should I also use high build over the epoxy.

I stated that I was already buying a gallon of base, didn't ask if it was needed.

I did read the replies, one said they used epoxy only and one said they used high build. One said I don't need high build and you said I don't need epoxy.

So every answer (none covered quantity of primer or clear) was different, not sure what the S 10 forums have to do with C10? Totally different body style.
