This is really weird - Please advise

Hello all, I have a 58 and I put a brand new gas tank in it, with a new sending unit and new filler unit, hoses, clamps etc. I usually dont put alot of gas in the tank, i put 5-6 gallons in, the gas gauge reads a little over 1/4 tank (I think its an 18 gallon tank, no?). Well I went to put about 10 gallons in the tank twice now over the past week and gas starts coming out as Im pumping gas. It seems like the filler is not adequately venting, although I have the vent hose hooked up. THis has happened twice. Can someone tell me how to troubleshoot this? ALso please confirm the stock tank is 18 gallons. I cant seem to get more than 12 or so in.

THanks!

It might be as simple as the gas pump at the station you go to filling the tank faster than it will take it. The big stainless tank I have in the bed of my 71 GMC that holds 35 gallons is that way. I can go to one station with rather slow pumps and it works fine but at the big new station with the new high flow pumps it's a pain to fill it and I usually end up holding the nozzle upside down to get it to take gas.

The vendor who sold you the new tank should be able to tell you the volume of it.

check to see if the vent hose 'dips' down anywhere so that it is trapping liquid. Air can't vent through liquid. Also look for kinks in vent hose or even some debris inside the hose.

I've found it helps to twist the handle of the nozzle toward the bed and don't try to fill at full flow. Listen for the sound of the tank getting full so fuel doesn't splash back when the nozzle kicks off.

It looks like the tanks not wanting to take gas fast is a fairly common thing for a number of us.

I have never had an issue with my 59 unless im getting gas at costco where they have those goofy emission reduction nozzles. Filling every 73-87 chevy ive owned has always been a hassle due to the shape of the filler neck. Newer pumps have more curve to them than the older ones, and could be giving you problems as they do to my 75 and 88.

I believe the tanks inside the cab are 17 gallons. On my 57 I can never get the tank completely full because of trapped air inside the tank when the truck is sitting on level ground at the gas station. If I bring it home and park it somewhere at an angle with the drivers side (fuel filler side) higher than the passengers side I can get another 3 gallons in it and the gas guage goes to full , otherwise 3/4 of a tank on level ground is the best it will do.
Anyone else have this problem ?

I thought 18 gals but it's been a few years since I checked.

I have no trouble getting the tank to fill. You could try adjusting the float arm slightly so it will read full without the extra three gallons. The worst that will happen is it will read empty early.

I have no problem fueling my '56.

But I stopped filling it to the top and parking it because the cold fuel expands and forces its way past the cap . Techron in the gas makes a great paint remover

I think it's the ethanol in the gas that makes paint remover. I never had a problem with spilled gas removing paint before they put that stuff in it.
