1972 K15Manual Column Shift to Floor Shift
I have a 1972 K15 4WD with 3 on the tree.
Looking in to converting to a floor shift using a Hurst Mastershift (part #3666809), but they only have an installation kit for 2wd (part #3670006). Was told through a Holley contact that it would not work with 4wd and that the 4wd kit (part #3670020} was discontinued. Not committed to the conversion, just looking at what my options are at this point. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: 1972 K15Manual Column Shift to Floor Shift
Have you try searching for a universal kit?
Like this one (It just an Example) Link: https://www.eastwood.com/hurst-indy-...r-5010002.html What transfer case do you have? The bracket could be mounted to it and use a Universal shifter. Can you fabricate one? ,,,,.../////

Re: 1972 K15Manual Column Shift to Floor Shift
It's got an NP205 transfer case. I was hoping for plug and play, but if needed I could fabricate something. It gets stuck in third once in a while, shifter floats around won't come out of third unless you jimmy it around. Rarely happens, but when it does it's frustrating. Checked the usual vendors, no one seems to sell a rebuild kit for the column shift. I'll clean and readjust the linkages, but my wife hates the column shift. She's fine with a floor shift, but can't seem to get used to 3 on the tree.

Re: 1972 K15Manual Column Shift to Floor Shift
I do have a column that I bought at the Nashville fairgrounds Swap Meet.
It's had a complete rebuilt. I gave $250.oo for it. Can send pictures if interested. If you don't find a way to get your floor shift going. I searched and did not find a linkage kit either ,.....//

Thanks, I might take you up on that. Hoping the wife will like the column shift if she's not afraid of it jamming up on her.

Re: 1972 K15Manual Column Shift to Floor Shift
Here’s a unique idea. I’ve seen a similar one made for 4 speeds.
While not for your year it is a good read. Best advice for teaching your wife how to shift your 3ott is to do it softly. Don’t get rammy.when shifting to second. Don’t try to shift the short way straight to second. Shift into the neutral gate and slightly down to third and then up to second. Slow and easy wins every time. http://devestechnet.com/Home/ShifterMech |

Re: 1972 K15Manual Column Shift to Floor Shift
I think she also might have been intimidated with me in the passenger seat watching her. Next time I'll just send her off on her own around the neighborhood. A friend also mentioned the soft shifting technique. It hadn't jammed in a while after I started shifting that way and thought I had it solved, but yesterday I pulled into a parking lot and coasted in in third gear. It was a slight incline, parking brake doesn't work so I after I shut it down I tried to shift into first and it was stuck in third. Can't quite remember how exactly I went from third to first, might have hurried that one, got to pay attention more.
Thanks for the read, I used heim joints on the clutch linkage between the pedal and the z bar on my 69 Camaro, they really are great for getting play out of sloppy linkages. |

If just the grommets are worn out in the shifter they are available.
