I-40 bridge shut down

The I-40 east/west bridge traffic will be closed for quite some time after ARDOT found this huge crack in a main support beam .

That's kind of scary! Now I'm going to have a fear of bridges....

Article I read said they noticed it years ago and are now going back through inspection reports to see why nothing was done.

Re: I-40 bridge shut down

The office I work out of is in Bartlett, which is a suburb of Memphis. I cannot tell you how many times myself and my family have crossed that bridge and quite frankly makes me think people need to go to jail for such neglect. I knew the second I saw the photo it wasn’t a “crack” it’s a fracture. You can tell from the rust in the broken areas it has been a crack for a very long time. Either inspections are poor or people didn’t want to do anything until it got this bad.
How many tens or hundreds of thousands of people have driven on that bridge since they beam was completely broken? No telling but I think it’s gross negligence on many peoples part to let it get to this point before doing something.
Going to be a mess for a good while as they are also not allowing boat or barge traffic to travel under it either.

Well, I’ve been over it at least half dozen times in the last few years... and I’m one person who lives over 1,000 miles away...

Re: I-40 bridge shut down

And the old bridge next to it they are still using was built in about 1949. Don't that make you feel real good crossing one of the main arteries of our country where millions do so daily?

That is good. Had not heard that but it’s because I don’t watch or read news daily.

Re: I-40 bridge shut down

That's scary business!

Our company was working at Cape Canaveral in '04 doing a fit check on some components. After we'd been using the crane for a few days we were told to stop because the annual building inspection turned up loose nuts on the bolts that held the rails that the crane road on. Not just not torqued...some of the nuts were barely started on the bolts. It had been like that for something like 3 years. I don't know if any heads rolled or not. Crazy.

Re: I-40 bridge shut down

Well the one who inspected it last was fired. They need to look at his supervisors as well. There was said to be evidence of a crack 2 years ago in that area. A complete bridge inspection will now be done and a company has already been named to do the repairs.
This is that "failing infrastructure" washington has been talking about for some years now. There are many bridges in the country much older than this one and the clock is ticking.
