Re: Other vintage

I only paid 4 bucks. Old cans like this empty run $20 or more. I was wondering if it went bad without any gasoline added

Re: Other vintage

Cool thread. I grew up in the late 60s and 70s. We were dirt poor and when school would get underway, Daddy would buy us a pair of shoes to go the year. I always wanted a pair of high top Converse All Stars. No way, Sears sold "The Winner", made by converse a few bucks cheaper/ So..... long story short, no all stars. But fast forward a long time, and I have a nice collection of "Made in USA" all stars. Here are a few of them. Any of you guys still wear these out in public?

I've got a couple pairs but I'm ashamed to say that I never wear them. I just think that they look goofy on an old man. Like an old woman in a mini skirt. That ship has sailed honey. Time to raise the white flag.

I grew up in the same era as you and I remember getting the "school clothes' in September. They had to last the year so they were all warmer clothing for winter. The trouble was that I walked to school and I had on all this warm clothing because it was supposed to last for the whole year. It can be really hot in September in California. I was sweating my little junior high school azz off in my new blue jeans in the heat.

And they had no air conditioning in those sweatboxes that they called a classroom. Ah the good old days!

Whoever invented air conditioning I want to go give them a big sloppy kiss.

Yeah, It's just one of those things you buy cause you never could afford them back in the day. I have sore enough feet without wearing them.

Lowenbrau used to be good. But the recipe or the production methods changed when Miller Brewing started producing it in the US. Just not the same. I haven't any of that in decades.

That's cool as heck. Count your blessings, if I wanted a pair of shoes I had to earn them. Seen $ blessings (e.g. Schwinn Krate) and otherwise dude, wouldn't change a thing.

I'm wearing a pair of Converse All-star mid-tops now, I have three pair and need another soon.

On a side, nice shelf Paul, wowza. Yeah dude, I'm a goofy old man.

Yup. Miller ruined it. You could still get the good stuff at BevMo a while back but it came with a hefty price tag. That other garbage that they put out and called it Lowenbrau was just not good. What do you expect. Miller sucks. I have friends that like Miller and I think that they should be committed. It's yucky and awful. To each his own but I'm not drinking it. I'd rather drink a bucket of pig vomit. I don't like it.

And whatever happened to Michelob? Where did it go? They had the cool bottles and it was good. Now it's gone. Now they just have that watered down diet beer. You might as well call it bottled water. It's terrible. My old fart buddy's drink it "for their health' but I haven't sunken to that level yet.

Re: Other vintage

I used to drink Michelob almost exclusively back in the '70s and '80s. At some point in the early '80s, something changed it just didn't taste that good anymore. One of my FiL's friends worked at Anheuser Busch. He looked at the date codes, to make sure the stuff wasn't expired, but he couldn't tell me what changed. So, I simply quit drinking it. I used to see it everywhere, but it's a rare sighting these days.

It always amazes me how seemingly successful companies can just disappear like a fart in the wind. What happened??

I wouldn't say that Michelob is a rare sighting. More like a no sighting. It's the Jimmy Hoffa of beers. Nobody can find it.

My first pair of "Chucks" were size 5. I started wearing them in elementary school. Isn't that what you guys around my age used to call Converse All Stars? I never heard them called Converses until they brought them back in colors in the '80s. They ain't Converse, they're Chucks! I had a thing for the low-top black. I still have a pair. I haven't worn them in a long long time. Not because of my age, because my feet hurt when wearing them. It's funny that sneakers bother my feet and I prefer construction boots. I guess I need the support

Well, the good news is what you just posted is old news. That did in fact happen and Lowenbrau went off the good beer list. But, 15-20 years ago Miller sold it, it went back to being made in Germany, and it is as good if not better now than it ever was. BUT....... The bad news is, once I was told and got back to buying it and enjoying it again it went MIA. I guess the area distributors dumped it or Lowenbrau stopped importing it. Very disappointing!

Few old things I have in my shop. Old helmet with other misc junk on my shelf. The Tums clip holder has my passes from when our grandchildren were born. Funny thing is blue is from granddaughter and pink was from grandson. Lastly a book on the entire history of the Indy 500, up until 1946 that is since that’s when the book was published.

That's a cool book and a cool shop. I only remember Clymer from the repair manuals. If I remember correctly they weren't the greatest instructions. But better than Haynes. I could be wrong but I don't remember either of them as being particularly helpful. More frustration than anything. Maybe it was just me.

I have a Gumby and Pokey too. I loved that show. They had such cool toys on that show. There is a rumor that Art Clokey was on LSD when he made Gumby. I can kinda sorta believe that because it was a little weird. Like someone who was stoned would think of.
I wouldn't know because I've never been stoned... Uh oh my nose just grew. Dang it. I hate when that happens.

I missed this post. Only saw Steven's reference to Lowenbrau. Now that you mention that Hot Wheels/beer exchange I remember it crystal clear like it was yesterday. Isn't my memory amazing? Well, I do remember sending somebody some kind of beer at some point in time and very possibly someone from here. Same thing, right?

No, I do remember. Just not all the time. I have thought about that, though (randomly). so, that was back when I was enjoying the third round Lowerbrau made back home where it belongs. Nothing against Miller, but they changed what was a good beer into a good beer name.

Paul, that one doesn't count for the beer I still owe you. I don't like owing people anything, especially for so long. I'd appreciate it if you'd go ahead and buy a plane ticket back east so I can settle this debt. You won't need a hotel, I have an extra bedroom you could stay in if you buy me dinner
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This reminds me of another beer exchange I was a part of. Deadhead NM, when he was in Albuquerque, sent me a microbrew from there that had pecan in it. The label is a picture of a 67-72 truck in a pecan grove. I still have that displayed with my other 67-72 collectibles.

I might be out your way to get my late brothers stuff and his car. He lived in Carlisle PA. I'm buying.
Lowenbrau and some others are a mystery to me. How can you have all that market share and just kiss it off?? I wouldn't know. I'm just a dumb guy that went to college for about 5 minutes. I never got an MBA.
One of my college professor's asked me once "what are you even doing here?'
I told him that I was just there to try and pick up on college girls and get me some college poonanny.
He told me "At least you finally got one answer right'. He was cool. I think that I even passed that class. Unbelievable. I didn't even really try. I found it boring.

Here I go again. I was going to post a pic. But I was thinking of my short lived college days and forgot.

This is my gas mask in my office. I don't know the vintage. Maybe someone can tell me. Korean War? Vietnam? I have no idea.

Chicks dig it.

I hope that happens. I'm about 1hr 20 mins from Carlisle. Just a hop skip and jump away

I looked into Lowenbrau. It was sold to Labatt's in '99 and they made it in Canada, back to the original recipe. I think Labatt's only owned it in N. America. Labatt's sold it in Canada and the USA. They stopped brewing it in '02 and imports of Munich Lowenbrau resumed to North America, on a smaller scale. That's around when I heard from a beer store owner it was back to the original again. In '97 they merged with Spaten. In '14 Labatt's regained rights for N. America and started brewing it in Ontario. Information out there isn't good. The first search result was some brew website and they think Miller still owns it. I don't have a website but I know more about Lowenbrau than they do. Age of information my foot!

It looks like Lowenbrau is exported to us from Germany and Labatt's only sells it in Canada now. So Lowenbrau is out there, it's the good stuff, but weak distribution or just not a lot to distribute. Just knowing it is still out there makes me want to find some

Re: Other vintage

Never tried a 'brau but I have enjoyed a good many Michelob's over the years. Although in recent years I've only seen Mich Ultras or something like that. I always thought of Michelob as a step up from most of the other beers. Now days it's Bud Light to sooth my beer urge. Bud and chips tonight as a matter of fact.

Re: Other vintage

I'm with you on the Bud Light. That's my go to. I don't care for the regular Budweiser and avoid it unless someone else is buying. Then all bets are off.

I remember getting stuck in the Williams wildfire. I was stuck right in the middle of it. I couldn't leave and I ran out of beer. If I went down the mountain the fire department wouldn't let me back up and I was driving a 1930 Model A hot rod. So I went to the café next door and asked the guy to sell me some beer. All he had was Miller Lite (barf) and he wanted 45 bucks for an 18 pack. He was a bit of a crook. But I paid for it begrudgingly and it was as terrible as I thought it would be. I only had a couple and gave the rest to the neighbor.

When I was looking up "Lion's Brew" I saw that Michelob is gone. People started turning their back on it and sales plummeted rapidly. It was good beer. I remember a spell way way back where that's what us young folk were drinking in my area. I remember branching off to National Premium. we used to drive past the Carling brewery south of Baltimore all the time. I liked National Premium better than "Mic". I think I discovered Molson Beer (not ale or golden ale) and moved away from the Premium.

I dated a girl in HS who's father was in charge of water testing. Later, when people became more concerned with the quality of water they consume, he started a water testing business. Then her brother took it over.

Baltimore is all proud of their "Natty Boh"... National Bohemian. I wonder if that's the only place people drink it. I never see anyone drinking it. I remember the ads growing up, and I guess the adults drinking it. Probably my first taste of beer (snuck a sip). Couldn't tell you how good or bad it is, but it is used as the "low standard" for comparison. I think that is the only reason National Premium didn't fly high. Everyone was drinking Mic, but when they'd taste one of my Premiums they liked it.

And one more thing to bring it back to "Other Vintage". When I was dismantling the old summer kitchen I'm repairing, up in the soffit I found an empty bottle of Gunther Beer. I'll get a picture today

Meanwhile, a video. It's vintage!

Re: Other vintage

I ran across this video of cool old cars and stuff out in Nelson, Nevada. Amazing condition and some strange creations.

I really liked that Heart of the Hills camp limo. No shortage of cool old school buses. The guy doesn't seem to know vehicles too well, but he made a good video

Re: Other vintage

Did you catch that David Bradley garden tractor? I've not heard of that one.

Anyone from that area that can add some info on the video?

My dad had a David Bradley. walk behind I used to run. That was the Sears brand for their ag equipment. Very well made and versatile.
