Video Thread: Are Trucks Really So Great?

I thinks so. I don't just mean these little pick'm ups and such we are all gathered here over, I mean all trucks. You put things on or in them and they move them where you need them. From a hand truck to giant size prime movers to rescue to military. Just about everything gets a ride in a truck or is integrated with one. I have always had a thing for trucks and after watching this first video it reminded me what a big part of my childhood truck world the workhorses of WWII were. I learned a lot I didn't know. I am starting this thread as a truck video thread to show the various uses of trucks. Got one share it.

This video is so great I just had to share. I hope you agree and I hope all will enjoy whatever comes

That was cool, and well done. It took nothing away from the video, but somebody could have helped the young lady with some pronunciation. Ordinance Corps is 'core' not 'corpse' and Willys is 'willis' not 'willies'. Was interesting and enjoyed the video though. Thanks Special K. Those trucks provided all of the essential vitamins and minerals plus iron.

I like Mattie. She does a great job on all these videos she narrates for Jack's Chrome. I noticed the "corps" and wondered if some may mispronounce that in certain areas of the country, like many other words. But I've heard and I say Willy's, but also here it pronounce Willis. Not nearly as much, though. I accept both as correct.

We really whipped up the good chit real quick didn't we?.

Special, I always appreciate your fair-mindedness on here, even now ;) However, I do think it's worthwhile to get things right when you can, even though I don't always. A video is for entertainment but also meant to convey information. So there is at least some drive to get it correct. I understand your points with regard to pronunciation, but I would submit that I doubt there are any parents anywhere in the country who speak of their son or daughter as being in the Marine Corps pronounced corpse. I think on that one you are either saying it right or you're saying it wrong. With Willys, I understand why people say willies, and I used to too. But I was informed of how he pronounced it and that occasioned me to change my pronunciation.

Well, I just learned the other day that Ely, NV is pronounced "E-lee"

Growing up mostly in AZ and learning some Spanish, I did have trouble with some of the butchered pronunciations of place names in CO and elsewhere. Like "Pee-ebb-low"

The first trucks I drove in the Army were M1954 5-ton trucks, not too far removed from some of those. They had a floor starter, twin sticks, and no heat.

And I've never heard anyone say "Willis" when referring to the truck. On the other hand...

I've heard Willys pronounced both ways. I always figured it was a regional dialect thing....

I know exactly what you mean. I was visiting a city and one of the streets had a French name. I was asking directions and correctly pronounced the street name in French. Got laughed at, because locally they pronounced it phonetically - more or less.

IIRC, I learned it from Richard Rawlings on fast and loud. Not a big fan of the guy personally, but used to enjoy the show in its early years. The guy does have some knowledge though.

Up until that time, I had always said Willie's, phonetically. So I looked it up:

Not sure last names are really subject to that, but I do see your point. Where you live, the name Brian (not my name) is probably two syllables and pronounced bry-an. A few states over and a few states lower it is probably one syllable, and pronounced more like braan ;)

Yeah, in Wyoming they say "Doo-boys"

Oh, and another one I learned as "Nay Purr Say" but most people just say "Nezz Purse"

But you better say "Ponn Doo-Ray" and not "Pond Oh ree al"

Seems convincing enough. I've never heard it that way, maybe because the Willys name was changed to Kaiser-Jeep when I was just a young pup. So I learned something new today - something new that's going to have people correcting me every time I use it.

Those WWII trucks were cool and tough. I watched a documentary one time on the making of the 1950's version of King Solomon's Mines. A big part of that documentary was the Dodge power wagons they used, how long they were in Africa, how many miles they went, and how little they spent on repairs.

Good to know on the Willys Jeep pronunciation. I like stuff like that.

"R-E-O" I always called the "Ree-Oh" They must have merged with Diamond because I mostly know them as "Diamond Reo"

Our VFD had a gas 6x6 with an automatic transmission! I think it was a GMC and supposedly of the Korean War era? The shift pattern was U-shaped and one side was PRDL high and the other side PRDL low range. (at least I think it had a park?) Ironically, it caught fire and destroyed the wiring and instead of fixing it, we just salvaged the pump/engine off the back and used it for remote water storage for years. That thing was super slow. It better be a big fire or you would never get there before it was put out already

Then we had a couple of M35 type trucks with a diesel and 5 speed manual (4 & 5 swapped from usual civilian shift pattern - was that for legroom?). Somebody changed the oil and stripped the plug or something ... it lost all it's oil and destroyed the engine. We got a 5 ton 6x6 to replace it, and were able to move the 1000 gallon F/G tank and pump and manifold and everything right over from the M35. So much bigger truck that it left a space in the bed between the tank and cab that's about as big as a Tacoma pickup bed

The other one was technically an M-something else because it came with a tank that I think was originally for fuel, but it was the same chassis as the M35. It's our last fire truck with a manual transmission

They were named after the company founder, Ransom E. Olds, using his initials. Yep, the guy who founded Olds in 1897.

Sold that and started REO or Reo. The company itself used both ways, so either way was right back then. It was REO first, REO Speedwagon. I know them as Reos as well. I say Reo and mostly heard that. I get to ride with my friend in his '58 to the antique truck shows
