Dana 60 Brake Shoes

Anyone else run into this issue? About a year ago I purchased new brake shoes/pads/master cyl kit/wheel cyl kits, etc. Today I finally got around to putting new rear brake shoes, and low and behold I found they were not correct. My truck is a C20 coil spring/Dana 60 3:54 with 12 inch dia. drums. I simply purchased shoes from Rock Auto for a C20 with coil springs, and really never gave thought to there were the two different rear axles for the coil spring trucks. This brake job has been one issue right after another. Should be on top of it once I get the new shoes. (if anyone needs a new set of Delco shoes for the non-Dana rear let me know, as I have an extra set I will not use)

Re: Dana 60 Brake Shoes

Had the same issue. The part store just looks up the brakes and gives you the first thing comes up. I even stated it’s a Dana 60. Wrong shoes and wheel cylinders. Having a C20 is sometimes a pain. I am having issues getting the front brake hoses. I am getting them custom made since no one understands, not round ends but block ends. Good luck with your repairs.

Just ordered a set of rear shoes from Napa. Tried ordering from local store, but they wanted $23 shipping in advance (non stock items). I could order online with free shipping, tax is much less so I went that way. All the big parts stores are getting to the point they do not stock anything but oil, floor mats, wax, and air fresheners, then they complain that online sales is killing them. It is rare these days I can even do business with the local stores, but I am not paying double for the same part from same source, and delivered to my door.

Might as well link this thread and these other two together....

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=821771

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=800993

They are all about the Dana 60 COIL SPRING rear end.

I've actually considered it also. Was still able to get new drums recently, but once they become unavailable, I'll go that route. Rear discs don't really add much to total braking as 70% or so is the front brakes.

Re: Dana 60 Brake Shoes

54 yr old drum brake parts seem to be getting scarce.
Maybe more modern stuff would be easier in the future to service.

Re: Dana 60 Brake Shoes

If I had it to do again, I'd probably go with ABS. Given that we drive this truck about 1k miles a year, it's going to take 20 years before I think about anything except the hydraulics leaking from age. If I live that long, I'll be 90, and quite likely wouldn't/shouldn't be driving any more. Speaking of which, it's probably due to have the brake fluid flushed.

Re: Dana 60 Brake Shoes

I did these about 5 yrs ago.
New shoes 1 drum and a spring kit.
Pulled the drums to look at everything the other day, now i have a serious out round drum. I didn't pay attention to the orientation of it.
Now it shudders stopping.
And the master cylinder is leaking. So if I am going to revisit the brakes I may as well.

Re: Dana 60 Brake Shoes

KQQL, the pedal shouldn't pulsate, but if it does, remove the drum and rotate it 1/2 turn. There are some machining tolerances that can lead to the problem. I turned drums with the hub whenever possible to avoid that problem. Try this first, it's a ton cheaper and less frustrating. Also make sure that there is no crud (even a tiny bit) between the hub and drum.

Re: Dana 60 Brake Shoes

The pedal doesn't.
Just the entire back half of the truck.

I'm sure the drum is junk.
It had a broken spring in the adjuster and went full tight and cooked it when I re did them.

But we'll see how these go on. If they're painless a I'm hoping my 99 crew cab will get some too.
