Re: My Big Fat Renovation

My wife was extremely happy, we now have our deck privacy back, no more neighbors.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

I spent most of sunday cutting out all the windows/doors and marking/nailing all the sheets on properly. I also bought some treated to do the final framing of the rear door so that can get the rest of it's sheeting.

We're supposed to finally get some rain again, I'm going to try to get the wrap up this week.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

The final thing I did was get RedFord's plow put together that's been sitting in the side yard for at least a month now. Played with it a few minutes to take some lumps down, I think it's going to be able to do what I need.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

And I actually was ready for the crane too. I had all the hangers up, over 50 2'-2" boards cut, and a pile of 2x4s for additional bracing.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

and my last story... I looked and looked and looked for my hammer yesterday. Probably wasted a good 10, maybe even 15 minutes looking for it. I gave up and wasted probably another 5 minutes scrounging around the garage for my back-up hammer. Found it, went to put it in my loop and I found the hammer I was originally looking for... and here's your sign...

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

That's looking great and it's giving me some inspiration! My wife and I are building a new home on 5 acres a little further out in the country. I have the house sited so I can add an extra building easily and yours is pretty close to what I'm thinking. Love the tractor too - I'm trying to get a friend sell me his (8N, not the Jubilee) which he actually bought new and added live hydraulics and all kinds of accessories.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

You are making great progress and the shop is looking really nice! You're a better man than me to be doing all that work in full sun with this summer's heat. I'm in the process of putting up panelling inside my shop - in the shade - and the heat is still killing me.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

Thanks everyone! Things might slow down a bit, I'm out of cash and didn't realize a HELOC would take over a month to complete the process, so I've had to borrow a little from the wife

Go bigger. I was limited by space (and $). The old Ford's are awesome tractors.

No choice. It won't stop being hot here. We had a freak weekend where it was in the high 70's, otherwise, it's been 90-105 every weekend I've worked on this, and our forecast is still showing low-mid 90's through the middle of next week. Not normal for this time of year. We had above average temps all through July, August, and it looks like deep into September this year.

I'm one of the last people you'll hear complain about heat (I can't stand being cold more), but it's time for this 95-100* with high humidity crap to go away.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

Crane showed up right on time.

They didn't "forget" about me. Always play nice with the people helping you out... he told me they overbooked last saturday and because I was the smaller (cheap) job - even though I booked it over a month ago, I got bumped. I mean, that's fine, I understand crap happens, but don't not show up and not call to let me know. Thankfully my boys were cool about it and helped me sheet it last weekend and they all came back to run the trusses.

We killed it too. It took like 45 minutes to get the first 2 set, but after that we averaged about 6 and hour. The crane was only on site for 5 hours.

We only had one boo boo. The trusses were too tall to reasonably unhook them one by one, so the operator was pretty good at unhooking it by moving the cable and hook around just right, well after we had about 6 set, I hadn't gotten my full X bracing in yet, the hook caught, and pulled my trusses out of alignment 3 or 4 inches. We couldn't get them pushed back because there was so many and they were all locked together already, so they're all crooked as hell. It doesn't really matter though, I'm going back through the opposite way we installed them and adding my permanent bracing and making sure they're all spaced and leveled up right.

You can kinda see how they pulled if you look at the peaks of the last 2 in the 3rd pic above.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

I started the permanent bracing and blocking. Up and down the ladder blows. I was only able to get 6 trusses permanently braced and level before my legs were like, "that's enough ladder for today".

It has a ton of temporary bracing, including a full "X" brace down the "room side" on the right side. You can kinda see it in the 2nd pic.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

Progress is about to hit a wall.

Heading to Fl for a much needed break over the next couple of weekends (10 whole days! - hopefully the hurricanes stop coming...) I've only used 3.5 vacation days since July 2018 (because I ran out).

I have tickets to a Clemson Game in mid October that will kill a saturday, our truck club car show will kill another, and if I don't take my wife out to do some "fall stuff" I might lose my financial backer. I found a cool "fall colors tour" that takes up most of a day. Hopefully my 65 still runs, I haven't been able to get it out of the garage since early July.

I might be shingling this thing over Thanksgiving!

It did, but it was too dangerous to take them back loose to straighten them up. I'll deal with it when we get back. I have 4 work days left (including today.)

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

No real updates, trip to Florida was fantastic. We literally had 10 days of perfect weather, lows 90's, low humidity, zero rain, and it was slightly cloudy for like half of a single day. Going back to work sucked, got out late Friday, had some things to take care of Friday, and I couldn't take how run down my yard/property was looking so I spent an entire day weed eating and cleaning up. I got my 65 Mustang out for the first time in months, took the C10 out a couple times, and managed to get 1 window in. I wanted to at least see how one would look.

I have a lot coming up this month, not sure how much I can get done. Going to a Clemson game one Saturday, my truck clubs big yearly picnic is another Saturday, apparently I have to burn another day at a wedding for people I've never met, and I promised to take the wife on a day long drive around the upstate when the leaves start to change. I might not have a roof until January

I'm at kind of a standstill anyway. Ran out of cash. Our loan was approved but we don't sign until Friday, then I won't get the funds until the following Friday. When I get it I'm ordering all the roof materials, plywood, shingles, etc. and I'll also order the siding and shutters (it's all coming from ABC Builders where I bought my siding 2 years ago). When I checked a few months ago they now carry my siding color in stock because it's become so popular.

Dang Jesse... It's been many moons since the last time I looked in on you here! You've covered a lot of ground since then... Looks great!!!

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

Thanks guys!

Project stalled, like they all always do. Rain, work, and commitments have killed any progress.

Beautiful weekend coming up and I'm going to lose an entire saturday at a wedding for people I've never met. I don't know why people feel the need to invite work people to weddings (my wife was invited). Invite friends and family. Leave work people alone, we don't want to go...

I did manage to get a day and a half in this weekend. I got the trusses straightened out side to side and got the big bow in the wall popped out on the side my friend lined up... Wasn't his fault, that was the side I had to cut my walls into 6' sections so I could get them up myself, even with the 12' 2nd plate it still leaned to the inside a bit at the top. With the truss weight on it, I got the other side all straight and was able to just pop it out with a sledge. It was dipped in about an inch in the middle.

Nothing pic worthy, so I put another window in at the end of the day so it looked like I did something

I did finally get our loan, so I'll be ordering all the plywood and shingles to finish the roof and I'll order the siding as well.
