Question How many miles have you driven your truck?

How many miles have you driven your truck? And over how many years? Is it carbed or injected? Do you have an overdrive?

I've put 33k miles in 4 years on the Burban. Running a generic 350 with a Qjet and it got a Gearvendor last year.

These questions came about after some beers with friends, one of which quite sure I'm the only person who still daily drives a carbureted truck. Maybe I am but I doubt it. What do you say?

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

I've had my truck about 9 years, bone stock. I've probably driven it 5k miles. The carb usually dries up between uses, but I have an electric fuel pump that I use to fill the carb back up before cranking it up. It has 217k miles on it (rebuilt ~100k ago). If I drive it every day, it fires right up.

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

I finished my C10 this last spring. It has a 4 barrel carb, TH400 (no overdrive), and 3.08 single-spin-rear-end. I have put 1600 miles on it in about 4-5 months.

Like all the carbed engines I've owned...give it a few days and it takes a bit to get it started due to the dry bowls.

Steve, enlighten us on how your electric fuel pump is plumbed and wired. Is in lieu of the mechanical pump?

I have 3 vehicles that I rotate through the year. A wintertime '85 K20, a spring & fall '72 C10 (no AC), and a heat-of-the-summer, '67 Rustang (with AC). It all depends on what the weather is like, so they all get started most weeks, but all go dry regularly.

All three are carbureted...the K20 (with overdrive) used to get a few thousand miles a year. I drive about 5-6 thousand miles a year total and will try to balance that between the three, but the K20 will see most of it due to the longer winter season. The 67 has a manual overdrive and has seen 14,000 miles since it's completion in 2013.

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

I've had my 67 C10 about 2 years & have put about 25k on it in that time. It is my daily driver & still run the original 2 barrel. I have to laugh at people who think they need fuel injection to be reliable. Nothing starts up faster than my 283, I can drive away immediately have have the choke off within 2 blocks of my house unless it is really cold out.

My 67 C20 I've had about 2 and 1/2 years & I've put about 7k on it. It's a little more cold natured but that's to be expected from the inline 6. I still wouldn't go fuel injection, heck this truck gets 15mpg with the 4 spd & 4.56 rear gears.

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

Squarebody - but it was a daily driver for 30 years and 200,000 miles.

Fuel injected, manual overdrive, 3.73 gears.

More related to classic vehicle usage: I drive my '63 Grand Prix about 1000 miles per year (carb, no overdrive, 3.90 gears).

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

Have owned this GMC for about 6 years. I drive it every day to work and here lately, have been hauling logs for firewood. Never misses a beat. GM crate 350, TH350 and a 373 rear. Some guys say i can haul as much as a 3/4 ton and has leaf springs. I wouldnt trade it for anything….ok maybe a 4x4

I have saddle tanks, and the pump is inline with and ahead of the mechanical fuel pump. It is wired to a toggle switch on the dash. My FiL would run the saddle tanks low enough that the truck would start cutting out, then switch to another tank and run the electric to get fuel up quicker. I don't do it that way. I fill a saddle tank and then drive about 100 miles and switch. Back when it still had hard starting issues when hot, I wouldn't dare let it stall from fuel starvation. That's when towing a trailer. I run the saddle tanks down around town, when there is less danger of causing a traffic problem. We were going to Monterey on US1 and the saddle tank ran out, just outside Carmel. I managed to switch tanks before it died. We would have had to wait for it to cool off to restart, and that's a windy road, one lane each way. I'd've been Public Enemy #1 if it had stalled all the way out.

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

I finished a frame off restoration on my Cheyenne Super in 1990. I have driven it to Des Moines, Gatlinburg, Bowling Green, Biloxi, Nashville, Pensacola etc..

It is completely stock except for the drop. carbureted 350, 350 turbo with 3.08 gears.

I have put just over 36,000 miles in that 31 years, but I have had other 71 and 72's all that time, and drive a 71 or 72 most everyday.

I estimate I have put 180,000 to 200,000 miles total on all of them in the last 30 years, and all had carburetors.

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

I've had this truck since '93. I have put many tens of thousands on it, but the Speedo/Odo combo doesn't work, so i can't tell you how many.

Wow HO455...I've had the Beach-Burban for less than 4 years and have only put about 6k on it! In the beginning it needed a lot of mechanical work so realistically, only the last 2 1/2 years were ripe for daily driving, but most of my retired days consist of shorts trips to the beach or store, with an occasional long drive for a family vacation. Very reliable now with stock 454 truck motor/peanut port heads and Qjet; THM 400 trans and 3.07 posi...but no overdrive, darn it all!

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

Since I received my C/10 (Zooey) as a graduation gift in high school back in 2008 I have driven Zooey as least a quarter mile that is the length of my driveway. I got halfway down the driveway and realized that my brother-in-law who took it for a test drive forgot to lock the seat and, the manual brakes were out. So I stepped on the brake pedal the seat lurched forward I thought I was going to die . I was able to get it to come to a complete stop before I said nope, screw it I'm not driving this truck anymore until I've got it completely rebuilt from the ground up. And as usual life gets in the way the Bodywork is 95% done I've still got everything else left to do.

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

Mine was my wife’s grandfathers daily. Had 76k on the clock from when he owned it but he worked her hard. I drove it about 250 miles then did a frame off resto-mod restoration on her about 11 years ago. Since then she has only logged 546 miles. She maybe going back under the knife again this winter as I have a friend who’s 2009 hybrid Tahoe just had a tree dropped on it and wants me to have the driveline. I keep contemplating a 71 GMC hybrid might be an interesting project if not just pull one out of a field and do it.

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

Bought my 72 C10 in 2014 with 85,000 miles on and now 7 years later has 92,000 so I guess about 1000 miles a summer season. Original 350 with QJet 4bbl and TH350 till 2019 when 700R4 went it. I park inside for the Winter then 3/4 pumps on the gas in the Spring and away she goes.

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

Let me preface this with saying I was career Army and since I bought my truck I spent about 15 years overseas, so my truck spent that time in storage or with my son.
I bought my truck 29 years ago with 139,xxx miles on it. The engine was “Overhauled” at 129,xxx miles (I found out later it was a VERY shoddy job).
1998, At 159,000 I did a complete rebuild of the Engine and Transmission. Since then I’ve put 15,000 miles on her, but actually use her very little, and when I do she doesn’t miss a beat.
She hasn’t seen salt since I bought her and rarely gets taken out on the road in the rain.
I love my truck, and my wife knows that she will never be sold.

Re: How many miles have you driven your truck?

I have a 68' C-20 that I bought in 2002. I have driven it off and on and it sat for 3 years a while back. The trans went out but after a fresh engine and trans I have driven it every day for the last two years and put 35,000 on it. I would drive it any where. 350 crate with a TH 350 trans and Edelbrock carb.

When I bought my '68 C/10 Stepside in 1973 it had about 80,000 on the Odometer. Now it's indicating 401,000+. So about 321,000. Actually it feels like it drives iself.

My speedometer/ odometer hasn't worked in nearly the entire time since I've owned it. In November of 2020 I put in a new after market unit and have logged in 5,365.1 miles of daily driving it.
