What a mess just look at this.

Look at this mess
A tri5 buddy of mine asked me for the past three years if I could reinstall his nova clip on his AD truck because the truck dog tracks. The clip was done back in 1992 from what he tells me. I told him when he takes the front sheet metal off and pull the engine to call me and I will take a look.
Well, he finally did as I requested and man this thing is a mess I did not expect anything this bad. The clip is installed crooked, ugly, different thickness of metals it looks like the guy that installed it used whatever was in the backyard. Anyway it has to be fixed so here are some pictures of what I have to deal with I cannot believe he paid the guy who did this. Some people should not work on cars.

Why do people feel the need to apply their absolute worst "engineering" to front clips and suspension? That's worth a swift kick in the nuts...

Yeah this guy needs something bigger than a kick in the nuts.lol But the word engineering and what's going on here should never be in the same sentence.lol The sad thing is my buddy who is an older gentlemen told me one day they were cruising and the guy that done the clip had the nerve to tell him that his truck was dog tracking. Well he did the clip. What a butthead he should have just said "I do not know how to install a clip properly look for some else".

Re: What a mess just look at this.

I’ve done a little work on the truck this weekend. I leveled the frame and built a jig so that I cut the clip out and get it ready for the re-install.

I cut all the ugly stuff off the subframe and then my camera broke before I could take a pic of the cleaned up subframe.lol It does not like looking at this either.lol I should be finished next week and I will post pics of what I do.

Eek!
It has all the 4 basic "food groups" covered: Icky, Yucky, Cruddy and Gross!

Good luck with that. Cut it off, throw it away, and start with an entirely new clip?

Who are you telling?lol It actually looks better in the pics than in person.lol Man this is unbelievable. I'm just wondering how many guys are riding around with clips like this because from what I know this guy has installed a lot of peoples clips in the Los Angeles area. Yuck.

LOL. I actually suggested to him that I just rebuild the frame rails and box everything and install an aftermarket IFS unit, but he wants the nova clip done correctly. I can do it no problem and it will look nice when I done, but it would have been easier to rebuild the frame rails. I already cut all that ugly stuff and its all setup for re-installation, but like I said my camera broke at the sight on this monstrosity.lol

Yep that's pretty bad. Well with all that extra metal to weigh it down, it probably road pretty smooth , hahaha From one angle of your pictures I see three cross members. I am trying to understand what was the reasoning behind the madness. Now believe it or not on occassion you can walk into a mom & pop body shop and see this type of work.

I hope you never see this type of work anywhere let alone a shop. This goes to show you should not let just anyone work on your car. Get references man, get references.lol

Yeah Kim this is a hot mess as my grandfather use to say.lol I will post pics of how I put it back together. Guys don't let just anybody work on your pride and joys. Like I said this is an older gentleman who trusted what he was told and as a result was taken advantage of. The guy who did this supposedly installed lots of clips and that's down right scary to think of people riding around with its crappy work under their trucks.

Was it the same guy who did that one that did the clip on Luckin Fou's panel? Looks like about the same quality level.

Russell when I saw it I thought the same thing. I called BCToyChest and told him to look at the Luckin Fou's thread so he would know what I was talking about. Look at the first couple of pics and notice that clip is not just crooked its also installed higher on the driver side.lol Pictures do not do this thing justice you have to see it in person to truly appreciated the Forrest Gump fabrication skills that it took to install this thing.

Re: What a mess just look at this.

Hey BCTOYChest,

I forgot to tell you something before you got off the phone so I thought I would share it with the guys here because I laughed so hard. Another one of our buddies was over while I was working on this and I asked did he use a tape measure at all and he said yeah but I guess it was the kind that did not have any numbers.lol

I see the need of safety inspections in your part of the world. Here you need a safety inspection when your register and insure a vehicle for the road for the first time. Some other provinces have yearly inspections.

This maybe true, but how would that help if someone was driving the truck and decided to install a clip over the weekend. The truck is already registered. I think its easier if people are a little more careful of who they let work on their truck. Also if someone gives you a price that is too good to be true you might end up with something like this.lol
