Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Love your build, I had a 70 with the same color combo yeras ago. On the bedliner..did you shoot it yourself? did it come with a special gun? And lastly what size wheels are you running? I tried buying BFG All Terains about 3 years ago...spent 3 monthes trying to locate some with no luck...same story back then..on national back order. I had always used the AT on my trucks and Blazers...I like my MT KOS but really miss the old AT.

Thanks! Paint is Kirker single stage urethane with clear over it. Gun is a DeVilbiss "starting line" kit - around $150

Thanks! Bedliner is Raptor by Upol, comes complete with the gun. Got it on-line from TP Tools. A kit goes for about $120 delivered. Read about three comments back for more info on the bedliner. The wheels are 15 x 8.

Bed finally on!!

I finally got the bed on the truck for the last time! Had a family get-togethor, and I told them if they wanted free food/booze, then they would have to help! Amazing how easy a bed goes on with 8 sets of hands on it. It sure was fun dismantling the trusty bed dolly I built so I could get some garage floor back! Anyways, once the bed was on, I finished color-sanding and buffing it. Turned out great! Also got the rest of the dog dish caps painted. And got the rear marker lights and brake lights put back in. Getting close now!!

Not sure if you mentioned it before or not, what color/type of blue paint did you use on the bowties on the hubcaps??

Got it at my local Ace Hardware Store. "Ace Rust Stop Continental Blue", but I've also been told Ford Blue tractor paint works well too. Here's a picture of the can.

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Ok, installed new Holley carb and new HEI distributor. The truck had a HEI distributor and Edelbrock carb and ran. Ran lousy, but ran. Screwed up and didn't mark the distributor prior to taking it out. After installing the new distributor, I get a backfire through the carb. Have double checked all the spark plug wires and confirmed they're correct. I know everyone is going to say it's 180 degrees out, but I tried that too, and still get the backfire. I'd like some input on how to start from SCRATCH with a new HEI install. Find TDC, rotate the oil pump shaft, install the dizzy.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance - Ryan

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Last night I used a compression gauge on the #1 cylinder to confirm the upstroke of the piston. Bumped the engine until I could feel the piston at the top of the stroke with a screwdriver. That's TDC right?? Installed the spark plug then put the distributor back in. Rotor pointed towards the #1 cylinder, then installed the plug wires in the firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Confirmed the wires went to the correct plugs. Fired truck. No backfire, but also no start. What gives??? Anyone care to help before I completly go nuts?

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Took a night off from the engine and finished up the bed, tailgate, and rear bumper. Really looking like a truck now. My windsheild is scheduled for tomorrow, I'm really crossing my fingers that I can get the trim in. Then I can get the cowl on and hood on and the exterior of the truck will be finished! Here's some pictures of the bed trim/tailgate/bumper.

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

I got the hubcaps from a member here on the board. TOOMUCHSTUFF. Look him up and he'll take care of you. The truck came with the steel rims, I just sand blasted them and painted them white. Thanks for your comments guys!

Hey Ryan your truck is really looking awesome! I like that step bumper. I bet you cant wait to roll that thing out of the garage for the first time. Good luck with the windshield tomorrow, from what i've heard, its either a walk in the park, or a nightmare. Hope it goes well!

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Thanks Nick, This will be the second attempt at the windshield. My glass guy said he's bringing another windshield, gasket, and I have both styles of trim, so all I can do is cross my fingers and toes and make sure I have plenty of cold beer

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Awesome job to detail, truck is looking like it just rolled off the assembly line. Did u get your engine running? The first thing that popped to mind is check all your ground wires. Make sure battery cables are not loose. Hope this helps.

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Thanks. I get plenty of juice, just won't fire. I'm going to have a mechanic buddy come over and give me a helping hand. Working on rear electrical now. Everything works except the rear marker lights won't blink. Looking at the schematic, it shows a yellow wire going to both the left rear marker and rear brake light. My new harness only has a brown going to both rear markers (along with a black ground wire.) Any thoughts?

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

You must be kidding..... I just read a thread that says the rear markers aren't suppose to blink. Can this be correct? Seems really weird that only the tail lights blink. Can anyone else confirm this?

Yeah it's true. The front side markers blink and the rear side markers don't blink. And thanks for the hubcap info.

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

first of all very nice build awsome body and paint work! I noticed you had the motor out and detailed it, did you reseal the whole motor with new gskts? and if yiou did, check the timing chain condition and timing? that is the whole basis of the engine tunability, if you are on TDC with your no.1 cyl technically you can put number one any where on the distributor and run your firing order from there. not trying to sound like a smart a$$ #1 cyl is at the drivers side front. distributor rotation is clockwise looking straight down on it, then again you may have an issue with your dist.

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Good weekend, getting real close now. Got the tool box painted, tires on, and amp/speakers installed. Had a small mis-hap with the windsheild, glass guy is coming back this week. Hopefully another week or so and I'll be on the road!

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

I make sure that #1 is on top dead center, then set the distributor in ,usually aimed at 5 o'clock for cylinder 1, turn on the switch put a plug in the number 1 wire and ground it then turn the distributor around by hand till the plug fires,it should start
