Truck Opinions

I'm looking for my first truck and I have found two that look good just wanting some opinions. Also I'm just looking to build a stock truck.
1. 1971 C20 Custom Camper 350 auto with a aux tank in the bed but unsure if it works. Lots of parts changed on truck fuel pump, spark plugs, front brakes, barings, etc. Also brake kit for the rear included along with the replacement panels. Also has a solid bed floor. Runs, and drives fine.

2. 1972 C20 Cheyenne with a cargo box under bed. All original automatic 350 solid bed floor also.

Just looking for some other opinions on the trucks any input would be appreciated.

Re: Truck Opinions

I like the blue one best but what are they asking for them ? Buy the most rust free truck you can find as rust repair is very expensive if like me you have to farm it out .I have a great shop I have been using for years and he treats me good pricewise but still aint cheap .I bought a rustfree K10 4x4 from California recently for a good price and had it shipped to Ga .

Re: Truck Opinions

Both of them are $3500 obo and owners have the titles in their name which I've had trouble with finding. I was thinking the blue one also like the color and the fact that it has a aux tank which I would like to have. He said he has never put fuel in it but I can handle mechanical side of vehicles body work I have trouble with. I think it'd be a nice truck if the tailgate was painted and rear bumper put on and some painted steel rims with original dog dishes.

Re: Truck Opinions

I'd check the blue truck with a soft magnet to look for bondo (but paint appears to be original with factory pinstripe, but close up pics look weird...) and I'd go with that one.

I'm originally from NY and that "spread" rust pattern on the 2nd truck is really hard to kill once it starts and will likely come back.

Also, $3500 is a fair price for the blue one, I'd want to get the 2nd one for less than that...

On the blue one, you can also repair the rust on the lower half of the truck and just repaint the truck from the bodyline down and have a really nice truck to cruise around in.

Re: Truck Opinions

I'd also be inclined to go for the "71. Looks like it's a Custom Deluxe with the Custom Camper option, which is just the fender badge. That tool box area on the '72 will be no fun. Easiest thing would be eliminate it. You'd have to rebuild the bottom area and come up with a rarer than hens teeth door that isn't shot...and the fiberglass box. The '71 seems pretty original and sound. The medium blue on blue is very likeable. Not that I'm not crazy about the medium bronze & white. The blue one should have had lower trim from factory, so something done there. Looks like factory pinstripe on the upper body. Look close to see what was painted and where to. Might have had the stripe redone. That's a blue rubber floor, right?

Re: Truck Opinions

I would consider looking at the desert regions of Oregon ,Washington State or Cali for a nicer truck and have one shipped in .You can find some pretty nice trucks from those areas for good prices .Also check out the Craigslist thread daily ,there are some good trucks on there .

I don't know who to get ahold of for shipping cross country or even know how to go about that.

Re: Truck Opinions

I wonder if the blue one took a few 22LR shots at the lower rear drivers cab and door? Otherwise the blue one looks pretty sound. typical rust but I bet you that paint will buff out well (looks factory, but who knows...)

"Lots of parts changed on truck fuel pump, spark plugs, front brakes, barings, etc. Also brake kit for the rear included along with the replacement panels. Also has a solid bed floor. Runs, and drives fine."

Looks like the blue one was getting a little bit of love, while the bronze one has just been sitting...

Truck #2 has some cool options, but between these two, Go blue.

Re: Truck Opinions

I think the brown truck should be considered. It initially looks a bit rough but it is a higher end model, has A/C, and may actually have less rust.
You must do your due diligence and bring along your soft magnet, screwdriver and strong LED flashlight. Good luck! Let us know what you finally do.

Re: Truck Opinions

Both these trucks are "rusted out".

If you are happy with either driving a rusted truck, or spending BIG bucks getting the bodywork done, I'd keep looking. The suggestion to look at the western states makes sense to me.

As for the shipping, why not get one that runs decently, and make a road trip out if it taking it home?

Re: Truck Opinions

I would love to find a nice truck from out west and drive back but due to work I wouldn't have enough time and plus I would be worried of breaking down out in Kansas and having it towed to WV. That's why I'm shooting for something close and solid but hoping to drive it home wherever it located!

Re: Truck Opinions

Jeez! If yer gonna break down, better make it Kentucky. You got the Kentucky long rifle, the Kentucky Mountain Home, Kentucky Bourbon, and so on.

Too bad about your work schedule. Another member of this board did post a thread about his road trip home after he bought his truck. Great story. I think he went with his son. Try to find the thread, it was great.

Re: Truck Opinions

No matter which one you buy or if you keep looking there are two areas that you want to make sure do not have rust. If they do, move on, period.
#1 Above the windshield. Specifically on the inside. If there is even a pin hole or a soft spot scratch it off the list.
#2 Kick panels around and above the vents.
These areas are very hard and expensive to fix. Also make sure the VIN tag has the rosette rivets.
Good luck.

Re: Truck Opinions

I like the blue truck. Going by the interior it looks like it might have been loved a little more than the other truck... For me it comes down to which has less and hopefully NO RUST in the critical areas...

Re: Truck Opinions

I called him and he said the rust pictured is the only rust on the truck and has replacement panels for the rusty areas. If I am able to go look at it I'm going to take a magnet to check other body panels make sure they don't have bondo filled areas.

Sounds good!

My only fear would be the truck was previously repaired and now the repairs are rusting (I only say that because given your location, this truck looks almost too nice!)

I hope it works out, it is a cool looking truck.
