I remember it. I was fishing with my then BIL quite a long ways away. We heard this loud boom and wondered what the heck it was. Funny how the sound carried, some places very close heard nothing.

My dad was down in Portland at the time and needed to get back home (close to the Canadian border).He had to prepare the car for the trip through the ash cloud. Was quite a journey. Took a very long time to get home, lots of stops along the way to clean ash off and make sure his makeshift extra filter he made for the air cleaner was ok

We were travelling from Orting, WA to Puyallup, WA and saw everybody pulling over and pointing. When we pulled over the sight was insane. In another 2 hours we were covered in volcanic ash.

The first time I saw that mountain was in late June, 1970. It was our first vacation from southern California in our new '69 truck and camper (my avatar). We were on US 12 just south of Mt. Rainier when I asked my wife to look at a map and check to see what that "beautiful snowcapped mountain" to the south of us was called. That was the first time we'd heard of Mt. St Helens.

The next time we saw it in person was the July 8, 2002. So sad.

I was 27 years young and hauling rolls of newsprint to the Seattle Post Intelligencer morning newspaper.

I remember it just as well. It was on the day after we had a huge graduation party. Class of 1980.

Although I live 1200 miles East on the Canadian Prairie withina few days we got ash here and I'll always remember that day as it was my 31st Birthday, May 18th, 1980..

I had seen a lot of the pictures, but I hadn't seen the one of the melted dash. Wow...

I remember it like it was last month. The guy at the bottom of the mountain wouldn't budge. His name was Harry Truman I believe. Seems like I remember that a man and his wife died in that Chevy after pulling over to watch. Still too close. Shame.

My ex-wife and I just got back to Reno from camping vacation up the coast back down I5 two days before that happened. We had ash falling in Reno, her aunt and uncle owned an IHOP on I5 and all the ash clogged all the refrigeration, a/c and heaters. They had piles of ash in the parking lot like after a snow storm.

We had to drive our rigs with the air filters wrapped in cheese cloth. When your rig would start to run crummy, you pulled over and took the air filter that was wrapped with cheese cloth out, removed the cheese cloth and shake all the ash out of it. Then wrapped it back around the filter and reinstalled it and drove off.

My parents still live in Orting and have a few mason jars of ash left from that day.

I was far away in Texas. I remember learning in science class just a couple years earlier that there are nothing but extinct volcanos in the continental U.S. So much for that science lesson. I went to Mount St. Helens a couple of years ago. Very awesome to view. I recommend the trip.
