Re: 68’ GMC frame off build

The only part of the truck that I was really unhappy with was the tailgate, the original was unusable. I tried to “patina” up a 69-72 gmc gate but it’s an art and I’m not that kind of artist.

I found an original paint 68 gate in Phoenix , only 1400 miles away. Luckily, a fellow truck guy on Instagram graciously picked it up and shipped it to me.

Looks like it’s been there since 68’

I absolutely love how the tailgate turned out. The inside of the gate is killer, I’ll take a pic tomorrow.

Finally back on this thing. Bent up some 4” tall c-channel to lift the floor enough to to clear the notch

Re: 68’ GMC frame off build

Making use of the floor from the 69’ GMC parts truck.boards had some significant cracking. Used these inserts from a company called Slabstitcher. Super easy to install and was a great project to get the girls involved with.

Re: 68’ GMC frame off build

I stained boards black and used a rough drum sander to remove most of it.

Scribed the original wheel wells to the box and trimmed the stake pockets for clearance

Re: 68’ GMC frame off build

Cool little detail, shortened the spare tire carrier to fit. Won’t hold a wheel, but I think it looks cool

Just read through the whole thread. Really enjoyed it. Tasteful work, and that clear coat was a great call! Well done.

Re: 68’ GMC frame off build

Outstanding build! I will be certain to follow. I really like how you are taking the time and effort to maintain the patina on the exterior. I wish I was able to do that, but I had so much rust that it is easier to just do a restoration.

Keep up the good work! Looks like you have a great crew helping on the build.

Thank you, I went back and forth in the clear, but in the end I’m happy I did it. Really brought the yellow back to life.

Re: 68’ GMC frame off build

Finished up the bed floor. I’m incredibly happy how it turned out.

Finished the tailgate side of the bed with a piece of polished stainless, bent up with 1” reveal at the top to mimic the original floor look.

I think the spare tire carrier was a cool little detail.
