SPID decode please?

Can some one tell me what one of my SPID codes means? It's a 1969 GMC 1500.

3G80AB REAR POSITRACTION A

I get that its Posi by the G80, but what does the rest mean?

The 3 and AB are random. Not sure about the A. Maybe short for axle?

Some plants added the extra numbers and letters some didn't.

Was it a California truck? Those seem to have the extra identifiers.

If your fifth letter/digit is a "Z" then it was built in California. I have noticed that the Fremont plant in particular added a lot of of extra identifiers to their RPOs.

I always assumed it was for emissions reasons but as another poster suggested maybe different plants did it for different reasons.

SPIDs are one of my favorite discussions on the forum so let us know if you find out. People ordering a truck today will never know what it is like to get all these options a la carte rather than as some kind of "package".

I assume you mean the 5th digit on the VIN?
No, my 5th digit is D.
