Water pump

I’m going to be replacing the water pump on my 250 straight six do any of the bolts need sealant on them that hold the water pump in place ? Any other tips would also be appreciated as this is my first time doing this.

Re: Water pump

Strange that nobody's chimed in.. Here's some grasshopper advice..

If a bolt needs sealant on the threads, it's because the threaded hole is open at the bottom.. Depending on it's location, it could open into a water jacket, an area that carries oil, or is exposed to oil vapors.. Shove a piece of clothes hanger into the hole.. If the hole has a bottom, no sealant is needed.. If it's open at the bottom, sealant is needed.. Form-a-gasket works very well as a sealant, and other products will work also.. I use plumber's pipe dope for water pump bolts that need a sealant.. Don't goop it on, a thin coating will suffice..

Re: Water pump

If holes tap into the water jacket, coolant will run out when you remove them...usually. So, do like Mr Pile says and probe them. If the hole threads are rusty, get a chasing tap and clean them up.
