Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Buttoned up the 72 . New brakes complete with new master and power vac from Pickmup trucks . New starter flexplate and transmission pan . Stupid thing in the pan I bought a kit that had everything from gasket filter and pan bolts . The pan bolts were loose going in I checked them and they were metric to bad as they were all stainless steel . So off to Ace for socket head bolts as the the original shoulder nuts wouldn’t work . Minor inconvenience.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I couldn’t find Rust Mort, so I’m trying a Rust oleum product. I brushed it on and let dry for several hours. Then I tried a test patch with the bed liner paint. I just put it on real light. I checked it this morning, it looked pretty good. Tonight after work, I will tape of the truck and spray the rest of the bed.

Never tried that product, but seems real good reviews. Rust mort is ehhhhh. Not that you can dip that panel, a 50/50 water and vinegar or stronger >>>>> rust mort, and do not let acid parts dry. Add say 1/15th Must for Rust even better. You do have to neutralize the material afterward with a baking soda bath. Rinse, sand or brush. Lacquer thinner works real well on surface rust, but that will ruin existing paint and has to be cleaned off too.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

The print is so small on the back of the bottle that I had to take a picture and blow it up to read it. Sometimes I’m guilty of skimming the instructions, so I read these several times. It says to wipe off galvanized, and to rinse off porcelain or tile etc. There was no mention of washing the residue off bare steel. So I tried a test patch of painting right over it. Wonder if I should rinse the residue off first, let dry, then paint?

They don't mention it, so it's probably a light enough concentration that it dissipates on the steel. Kindasorta like an etching primer?
If the test works, it'd be preferable to rinsing

100% IMO, and scrub/brush, sand as needed. Perhaps finish with distilled water and blow dry. Sand some more. A lot goes into prep. The more precautions the better.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

The whole time I've owned my 68, I thought the cigarette lighter was missing. I was watching a YouTube video this afternoon that made me realize the small black plug I found on the floor of the truck when I got it last year was actually the factory cig lighter delete plug. Good thing I kept that plug in case it was for the truck. Unfortunately it seems to have shrunk over time and now only fits loosely in the hole, so I'm gonna have to come up with a way to keep it in place. I'm thinking a dab of E6000 should do the trick.

I'd like to see a picture of that Delete Plug.
My truck was an obvious fleet purchase -- all manual, one-color, no A/C, Stepside, no frills. The one item that stuck out on the Build Sheet [before I lost it] was DeLuxe Ashtray. People were serious about smoking back then.

I've been thru a number of cigar lighters. They seem to burn out. I don't smoke, but the 12VDC outlet has come in handy a lot.

Ripped out the old trailer brake box and 20' of wire.
Tore out the old cloth heater/AC hoses, most of which went nowhere anyway.
I mangled the cardboard glove box liner, so debating whether to make one from sheet metal or just get another one.

Interesting notion about a sheet metal glove box.
If I was building one, I'd make it so the long part hinged in on itself and could open out once in place. The cardboard unit does this by bending the cardboard, but metal won't be as flexible.
Think of it more as a Ship-In-a-Bottle, than as Box A goes into Slot B.

Yeah. I pulled off an ancient Brake Controller box from my Jimmy the other day. Only used it once. I was back in there doing a root canal on my Parking Brake Cable.

Yeah, thinking origami, or in 3 pieces with the ends attaching after the folding piece is in place

Gregski made a glovebox out of sheet metal recently.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Got the truck bed coating done last night. I found out it doesn’t remove dents, LOL. But I prolonged the life of this 51 yo truck box. Next I got to get some volunteers to lift box off frame. I want to wire wheel, prep and paint the bottom of the box and the frame.
This truck is from Oklahoma, so it’s very solid for its age. I’m in Iowa, trucks don’t survive this long if driven in our elements.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Drove the truck around the block today a couple times, got a few little bugs to work out. Biggest headscratcher is a odd misfire after driving. You can start it up and it will idle fine. Take off and drive, go a block or two and then come to stop and the truck is running ruff at idle. Shut truck off, let it sit for a couple minutes and then fire up and its running smooth again. So starting rest of the weekend will be going over the ignition and grounds.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Got the box off tonight. Started wiring wheeling the frame. Weather is supposed to be in the 50s tomorrow, so hopefully I can can a lot done on the bottom of the box. I’d like to get it wire wheeled, rust proofed and painted this weekend.
Then I can cover it with a tarp and get the frame completed.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Wire wheeled the bottom side of the box. Way harder than the topside, all the supports in the way. Then took a piece of wood and pounded out the dents in the floor and wheel tubs. I didn’t get the dents out, but definitely made them smaller. Then applied the rust remover.
Tomorrow I’ll rinse it, dry it and brush on rust oleum paint. I’ll see if I can find some undercoat for the wheel tubs

Got my voltmeter hooked up, I used the guts from a cheap stand alone meter. 'Calibrated' it with a 22 ohm resistor in series, it reads pretty much 8-16 volts with 12 ish right I the middle. Pic is with ignition on. I'm happy with that
