Would a 69 6 lug 12 bolt rear end be the narrow one?

I'm looking at one on ebay, and I'm looking for the slightly narrower rear end. The one I'm looking at is out of a 69 SWB 4X4 truck and is a GM 12 bolt with 6 lug axles. Not sure if I can get out to measure it myself before the auction ends. I asked seller to measure it, but there are so many different ways to measure that you never know if someone is measuring the same way you would.

Just wondering if ALL 6 lug rear ends were narrower than the later 5 lug ones.

Forgot to mention it's off a half ton. Did 4x4's and 2x4's use different rear ends?

Re: Would a 69 6 lug 12 bolt rear end be the narrow one?

I don't know if they are narrower or wider than the 2wds in any year. There will be leaf spring perches on a 4wd (which are different from 2wd leaf spring perches I believe too),and the 2wd axle if it has coils on the back would have the tracking arm mount the 4wd won't have. But the axle is the same axle.

Andy, I thought in mid 70 to 72 the rear axles were longer (wider) that the others. Sure seems that way on mine. The 70, and 72 axles are wider than the one that came on the 69..

I know that the 65-66 trucks are narrower than a 69 6 bolt( i put one in my truck) But it looks the same and bolts the same( trailing arm) so if he says its a 69 that it might not be?? something to concider

They are wider starting sometime in 70. All 4x4's will be leaf spring. The difference in width is about 3/4" on each side. Yes,it is the narrow one.

Well, that's what I was thinkin', but I didn't want to call out the man with 63,000 posts until I had some more proof...

I think I'll take a chance on it. Comes with the front axle too, maybe if I clean 'em up real nice I can end up with what I need for free...

It's only a 3/8 inch diff on each side, but in a nutshell, yeah.

I'm just gonna shut up.
I just looked in my notes, you are right. 56 inch verses 57 1/2 inch wide.

Re: Would a 69 6 lug 12 bolt rear end be the narrow one?

The only reason I know is because I used to have around 40 12 bolts sitting around. I also had several people years ago lie to me about the axle swap on these year trucks and found out the hard way.

Re: Would a 69 6 lug 12 bolt rear end be the narrow one?

Quick Question, If i have a 2wd leaf 71 c10 and want to get that more narrow 67-69 rear end, Can i just get a 4x4 rear end or does it have to be a 2wd rear end? Im just currious to save me the trouble of having to weld anything onto the new rear end? Also what kind of gear rations did the 67-69 rear ends have? Mines currently a 373 and its good with my 700r4 but the axle is a little wide for my tires and rim combo

Pretty sure spring perches and shock mounts are different. Be easier to get early leaf rear.
