47-55.1 LS low mount A/C

I yielded to the LS bug and picked up this built 6.0 for a steal. I want to run ac and don't want to spend $2K for the front runner system. Wondering if a regular low mount bracket will work with this current setup. For those who've gone down this path, are there any clearance issues with the low mounted A/C system?

I run a 6.0 in my 1956 truck stock cross member no issues on the low mount ac compressor in stock location. Some others may comment on the earlier years.

I have used the Holley low mount and dirty dingo low mount with success. Both use a sanden compressor with the stock a/c belt location. Both companies have the measurements of there systems so you can easily measure to make sure it will fit.

Too cheap to buy a low mount compressor for my LS. Fabricating one isn't difficult.

This is in a first series truck. My engine is set back pretty far and I had to trim one of the unused mounting ears off the Sanborn compressor, but it works. I used the belt tensioner from the GM truck. The end-plate shown in this photo isn't the one I ended up using to get the lines to fit - there's a bunch of options for the Sanborn compressors



Mine's based off of the Alan Grove compressor mount that Vintage Air sells

I used the Alan Grove bracket for standard Sandem type compressor. Probably could have made it fit without extra modification if we cut off the unused mounting tabs off the compressor, as was suggested already above. But we put a little notch in the frame instead, just to be on the safe side.

the other thing you should know which would make life easier is that Sanden makes that compressor with ports that face straight back in the rear head. I used that compressor in my 35 Chevy streetrod for clearance in a similar situation.

If you have the compressor, you just need to change the head.

Finally getting around to installing the engine. The AC idler arms hits the top of the Mustang II fluid line.

What's the plan of attack there? Take the belt sander to the bracket or ??

Not exactly sure, but a belt sander sounds like an option. I'll need to see how thick it is in that spot to see how much material I can remove. I'm thinking I'm going to have to remove quite a bit to account for engine torque.

I can't comment on clearance because mine is mid engine, but you can use the factory truck compressor with adapter fittings. The truck compressor is 10.5 CFM which is the same as the larger Sander. Be careful of some of the car compressors because some are variable output.

Thought about that but found that there’s less clearance than I originally thought. The engine was sitting in place on the initially. I removed the idler arm and the motor settled another 3/4”. I was hoping to be able to grind a relief into the arm pot it’s not possible. I’m afraid the best thing to do is getting a different bracket and try mounting it higher.
