No, both are stainless. I don't know how tall chrome over brass was, my guess is 3".

Interesting. I'll definitely dig them up today, and in fact, I believe the outer un-painting ring is a little taller, go figure. But why would it feel heavier, my imagination? Like I mentioned, that's what brought my attention to it. My scale probably can't pick that up.

Wouldn't be the first time I thought "normal" was over here but it's still over there, and won't be the last.

I couldn't wait, I don't know why I said measure cavity side down before, what an idiot. Anyway, only way I can make sense of it is perhaps someone punched it out as suggested. However, you'll have to take my word for it the cap is noticeably heavier. 50/50ish they made different ones & the 3.1" wasn't often. Maybe it's a reproduction ?? Tell me what I'm missing.

Maybe I'll strip the paint, weigh em again...........Ha. No, I can't use the tall one, though the other three have to be polished and repainted at some point. Waiting on a fourth cap, but I'm throwing rallies on first so no hurry.

Punched out is an interesting thought, but from here I can't see it. It has a few minor dings in it, adding to the mystery, but it's been a lot of years so who knows.

Interesting... My only guess is the mystery cap is very early in the run as it is polished, heavy and looks to be chrome over brass.

This hub cap mystery is neat and all, but I still want to see more of that K truck with the tool box.

GM changed the stamping dies around '74 on the 1/2 tons. If you look closely the high ridge '69 thru '73 caps have more detail. An extra ridge line around the base of the coned out section and on top of the coned out section. If you have a blue painted low version ( low detail smoothie ) it is not a genuine original issue cap. Someone got creative, or maybe it was a service part from the Chevy parts dept? The painted steel version was used till '78 on base models, all bowtie colors went from blue to gold in '73. The chrome over brass version (blue bowtie) was '69-'72. '74-'75 ( gold bowtie) was stainless, however, there was a rare chromed steel ( gold bowtie) version that surfaced around '73, but most are stainless in these years.

No kidding, I wondered if it was different material & chrome. Unfortunately I don't have one of the original caps to compare. Just for kicks I'll see what it looks like polished on the inside.

Great information, and I think I see what you mean, picture captures it. That's sure useful, maybe next time I won't buy the wrong cap, but I have to say the tall one is a nicer cap. Other than bowtie color, is the "mystery" cap a 74 forward?

Hmmm, how none of these caps are magnetic?

Edit: Thanks to your education I got bad news for me, turns out there were at least three different caps, for 73 forward it would seem, because I have three different caps and only the pair of NOS since painted bowties match.

One is still yellow bowtie, and the top ring is like the 3.1" (more details) but it's 3" tall.

Gee thanks

Re: Somewhat useless Truck trivia...

None of the caps are attracted to a magnet means they are either brass (or bronze?), and the steel ones will be 300 series stainless, so that they don't rust. 300 series stainless is essentially non-magnetic.

Learn something new most days.

I read some place(s) the 70-72 were copper. But I looked it up and "brass, alloy of copper and zinc" for more somewhat useless truck trivia.

Want to know why MRI machines are so expensive? They use an intense magnetic field, and have stainless steel re-bar. That ain't cheap! Ferromagnetic alloys would interfere with the magnetism.

Another thing that I believe is a CST/Cheyenne Super only is the front fender seal that is bolted on the side of the cowl in between the door and fender.

Right, mine are a mess.

I have a question for the somewhat useless trivial board nation,

The fuel tank in the cab of my 72 Super is insulated, pretty sure it's the same stuff they installed on the interior cowl, definitely original, IMO. The tank has the paper panel as well.

My 71 Deluxe wasn't insulated, or at least I didn't see any evidence of insulation. I've owned it since 89, an old man owned it before me, since new. It seemed to me that the tank was unmolested when I tore it down.

Both Fremont trucks.

That's my question how come, and did GM install any other options?

Seems the insulation serves more of a purpose than "for the tank". Looks like it's intended to insulate the lower rear cab and the tank just happens to be in the way. It runs down to the floor.

Was it a big panel with a fold near the top? Black in color just like the firewall insulation like you said? My Longhorn cab had it as well and I'm certain I tossed it.

Re: Somewhat useless Truck trivia...

I can't remember definitively on the gas tank question. Most that I've seen had the insulation (but I'm not sure I've seen many non-72 truck gas tanks).

Here's another new question with the answer only mentioned a few times on this site:

The different tailgate stampings have been mentioned (EDIT: I thought this was mentioned in this thread, but I had in mind a different thread) differentiating the various model years (67 has full length speed bump, 68-69 has the break in the speed bump, 70-72 has the inversed speed bump near the top of the gate as well as the crisp line at the end of the recessed area on the aft side of the tailgate) but...
At least for 1972, what other stamp (not mentioned above) differentiates an OEM tailgate from a reproduction tailgate? Some (maybe all?) NOS tailgates do not have the stamp in question either.

Insulation plus the panel on the 72, I suppose it's a light black, I thought it was brown but I'm not one to speak for colors sometimes, gets a little confusing. My 71 just had the panel.

Not sure what you mean by speed bump.

Here are some pictures condensed from another thread.

In my question, I am referring to a different stamp than what is pointed out in these pictures.

Cool Re: Somewhat useless Truck trivia...

Here's some imo useless trivia. I believe I read somewhere that out of all the trucks produced like less than 1% of them were equipped with factory shoulder belts that may be just be 1 year or the whole run I'm not exactly sure. Someone may chime in who would be more knowledgeable about shoulder belts. And, although the Custom Camper/10 and nameplate could be ordered until 1970 I've only seen a few, less than 7 on here and happen to have the emblem shown here. It wasn't very common in 69-70. I think they're both interesting tidbits of info maybe not completely useless but interesting nonetheless.

Anyone? I'll give it a few days and post the answer.

Is it the indentations where they are welded together in the valley the other difference? I'm learning stuff here. I am going to have to check my gates now to see what they are. Dang it. It's hard enough finding a good gate. This could make it more difficult.
