It used to be ... Glorious!

OK, not glorious, but it was kinda cool. This is the old silage and then hay bunker out at the family farm. The siding wood came from a couple of very old very large silos that were taken down ages ago. Long tongue and groove boards.

After retirement my FIL let me use the bunker to put all my trucks and junk in. I strung a long cable high across the front with another cable at the middle strung up to the gable for support. I put two large tarps to close it off, and whaalaa, my own cool place (especially in the winter haha)!

We had a couple of board get togethers out here. One for Longhorn Man and one for Brad. A lot of fun for sure.

I think I had up to seven trucks/burbs in here at one time. And until very recently had a couple of Costco car tents full of good stuff (junk).

Well its empty now and its going to be dismantled over the next few weeks. Going to be sad to see a neat old part of the farm go away. As you can see its in sad shape, so its time.

Re: It used to be ... Glorious!

There's still a number of interior barn doors here made from old tongue-and-groove wooden silos. Those silos were probably built in the 1920's, and were torn down about 30 years later.

Look through the lumber in that bunker, and see if there's enough good stuff to use for a project. Build a basement door or a blanket chest out of the wood, using the original T&G. Clean it up just enough to get rid of the weathered fluff on the outside of the boards, but leave the dents and other blemishes intact.

Its being taken down by a company that recycles old timbers etc. So it will end up in good place

Re: It used to be ... Glorious!

It is sad to see it go. If it were needed it could be saved I'm sure.

I built my little 12' wide garage from salvage lumber (mostly), all the windows too. All the steel roof was salvage or fresh new leftover from the same job. Purlins were leftovers, too. Siding came off an 1895 Victorian, rafters (and all other 2 x 6) a 1980 3-car garage. Cost: $0. Good to see the material from your building will continue being used

Man that is very neat. Sad to see it go but good that the useable portions will be repurposed.
I worked for a guy in college tearing g down old barns and houses all over NW Arkansas to recover all the useable wood. Found some neat stuff around those old places.

That is very cool! That just goes to show how much better that old wood is compared to the fast grow stuff we are getting these days. I bet that was awesome storage in it's day! On a side note, have any of you heard from Longhorn man?

Re: It used to be ... Glorious!

Always tough seeing something that's been there for what seems like forever coming down . I get people all the time asking to buy my barn , but still standing at over 150 yrs . I need to mend one corner post but it's still structurally sound

Re: It used to be ... Glorious!

It's like seeing a old truck or car get parted. You hate to see them go. But if it is beyond repair and the parts will go on to a more useful purpose rather than just rot away then I guess it's worth it.

I need a shed built and I would be all over salvage lumber if I could find it. I can't imagine what it would cost today with lumber prices what they are. Salvage lumber was expensive before.

It took me 6 months to find used brick that matched the existing brick on my house. (PITA) But it was worth it because you can't tell the difference between the new and the old. I got lucky on that one.

Great! It will feel good to only pay 25%-30% more after paying over 300%. It was around $20-$22 a sheet before the BS.

No more pics. Im vehicle-less for a few days so I cant run out there. I hear its slowly being dismantled. That old tongue and grove wood is worth some coin. Its really thick too, so It will plane down nicely and still be thicker than stuff you buy these days.

We had a stately 1800s mortise & tenon hand hewn chestnut barn at my folk's place in the mountains. I had showed pictures back when I first joined. The place isn't being farmed, so not being used. One end had lost some corrugated roof and the timbers were exposed. One of the ornamental ventilators in the end wall had fallen out and I was in bad shape financially. It's a costly building to repair and maintain to just sit there. I was stressing over it but didn't have the means to dismantle myself at the time, so I advised my mom to take a very reasonable offer to dismantle. I will always hate thinking about that. Would rather forget. The guy graded the site all out. Ready for a steel clad pole bldg

Should be finishing up this week. Some real serious cracking and creaking when it came down. Lots of really nice dimensional lumber in there. Back when a 2x6 was really 2x6

It feels funny to say the building is now raised. Sure not as raised as it used to be. Just good memories now

I’d say that the building is razed but that’s just how I was raised.
(I’m not a spelling snob. Just tryin to be funny)

Hey Mark, times are a changing. Sometimes we got to look ahead to make new memories. It’s fun to look back at the good times.

Re: It used to be ... Glorious!

This goes larger than the ol' barn. I recall most faces and trucks. Back when being on a forum meant something. We could communicate with and get to know people with the same interest after all the years of enjoying solo or maybe a few others in your area. Get togethers were a great thing. People getting together to help one another out, make things happen. All because we knew each other from here. You guys had a nice thing going in your area.
