One mirror sticks our further than the other

My drivers side mirror sticks out a couple inches more than the passenger side does .. is this the way they came new with the 1983 truck,, Or if one pulls hard enough ,,will the passenger side mirror extend out like the drivers side one does . i just bought extended mirrors for towing my travel trailer and the passenger side mirror does not fit because it is to long .

Keith might have a answer to this

[QUOTE=GOPAPA;9113891]My drivers side mirror sticks out a couple inches more than the passenger side does ..

Here are photos of both sides of the truck along with how the Travel Trailer Mirrors fit .. the fit is good on the drivers side,,,but the round tubing holding the mirror on the passenger side is short and the mirror slides on to far and does not extend out far enough to see past the travel trailer which is 8 ft wide.

I suppose that the reason there is a left and right is because one would be backwards ,,,.. .. I know that my 71 chevy had a different location for the passenger mirror so the driver could see it better due to the wing window trim .. my passenger mirror is 3/8 inch toward the rear of the truck more than the drivers mirror

I know that the vans have a crooked tube on their mirrors ,,but was hoping to find from anyone if the Chevy Truck for these years built for campers had a longer tube on their mirrors and some one put one of these longer tubed mirrors on my drivers side .. ( but again when you buy a Travel Trailer add on mirror they do not state it this way ,, ??? ) I may have to come uo with my own invention to make the mirror stay on after holding it out the 2 inches or so..

Re: One mirror sticks our further than the other

I have a set of the 'Dumbo' mirrors. An aftermarket set purchased after I bought a boat and wanted better sight of the trailer and nearby vehicles. Both of mine are setup like the one on your passenger side where the mirror starts just after the bend.

Don't remember if there was any adjustment possible.

Re: One mirror sticks our further than the other

Take the screws out of the stainless portion and pull that off of the assembly. It's been a while but I'm pretty sure that tube just mounts on some plastic bushings that can be loosened and you can adjust the distance the mirror portion is from the body.

Re: One mirror sticks our further than the other

theres no visible screws in my mirror heads, there may be some behind the mirror glass, but the only visible fasteners on the head are rivets
the side that fits the door does have the plastic tensioners.. ive had to tighten those before, but those have no bearing on how far the mirror sticks out from the door

I was about to reply with the same answer . The travel trailer add on Mirrors I just bought are to fit ither side stated when you buy them ,, But in my case the only side it fits is the long tube mirror on the drivers side ,, If most mirrors are the short tube ones ,,then these add on mirrors will not work .. you did say that your mirrors are the short tube ones ,, right ?

Here is what I did ., I backed up to my trailer close to the tounge and while sitting in the truck seat and looking in my drivers mirror and passenger mirror with out the add on mirrors , I could see down both sides of the travel trailer.. NOW here is the puzzling part.

My travel trailer is 8ft 1 inch wide and when I run my tape measure through the drivers side window to the outer part of of the passenger side mirror and read the tape at the drivers side mirror at the outer edge I read right at 8 ft.. I guess because my truck mirrors are infront of the travel trailer close to 14 ft ,it allows one to see down the sides of the travel trailer,, ??? I know ,,sounds not possible .. but this is a true fact..

I still want the add on mirrors so I can aim them down towards the travel trailer tires .

Thanks for the correction! It’s been a while since I messed with this type of mirror. I put van heads on my old crew cab for towing with a slide in camper. Had to heat and bend them a bit for the best alignment. I never did polish the heat discoloration out.

Not that it helps, but years ago I remember seeing a thread about those long arm mirrors and what they came on/came from.
My '83, '81 all have the same short arms.

Both my mirrors have rivits in them and so cannot take them apart to see if I can relieve anything to let me slide the mirror on the tubing , I tried pulling on one of them and shoving on the other and they are sixed solid ,, i though the same as you that maybe I could slide them,,

Those mirrors are made by retrac 604750 or the old number of 291 this is the mirror and the arm you re-use your base.
If somebody is a member there they could see what the attached photo in that post is.

[more edit] 291 https://www.rvnews.com/product-detai...retrac-mirror/

Probably not a 291 since theres an obvious bushing on them.

Re: One mirror sticks our further than the other

GOPAPA,:Tip: What side do you like the most?? fix will depend. On you mirror set up. Because from what I see there the same mirror's.......
If you do not like the short side.> The Right side has to be unbolts from the truck you will have to work the arm back forth a little as you push the mirror off the arm go slow. till it is out as much as the other side mirror. Now the mirror under the glass has two clamps with a plastic sleeve press on the arm hold it and let move for adjustments. cation-CATION do not pull to far out as the arm may pop out of the first bracket on outside of the mirror. If you take a look at the door side arm under the cover it's all most a mirror look of the arm under the mirror glass.
If you do not like the left the out so far you do the outset order as what was said for the
right side. WD-40 just a little, may help if it really tight the WD-40 will dry up in time.
