65 c10 stepside build

Well I've gotten most of the wet sanding done on the cab, hood, and front fenders and today I finally put the rear fenders back on. I'll have updated pics soon. Should be ready to paint here pretty soon.

I'm still on the hunt for a t-56 transmission and I'm also looking for the cheapest and easiest way to change the rear end to 5 lug. I've been looking at a rear end from a 71-72 c-10 but I heard about, but not too familiar with, redrilling the axles and complete axle swaps. I want to stay away from wheel adaptors. Also, will I have to change the driveshaft length if I use the 71-72 rear end?

Yesterday I went and got my transmission!!! Did some more wet sanding and fixed a faded body line on the side of the hood. Here's some pictures of it's current status.

on the rear no should be able to use the same driveshaft with it. Looking nice. you do any welding at all on the side? I am looking for someone that can help or do some welding on my truck in the dallas area atm?

Thanks Sean for the info. I do know how to weld and I do some welding, but I'm still a beginner at it. Also, I only have access to welder up at the high school shop

Hey Jeremy,
Well rats lol will call around plano to some welding shops and see what they will charge to seal up most the holes on my firewall.
I dont think you will need to redrill the mounts on the 67 up trucks with 5 lug they should be the practically the same axle housing as the 62 up trucks i know they use the same trailing arms.
Again sweet looking truck. Wonder if i could bribe your automotive teacher into giving lessons on the weekend :P.

Well hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll be up at the shop welding some holes in the firewall as well, if I can the wiring harness in this weekend. It would just be so much easier if I had my own welder, then you could come over and we could get yours welded up too

Thanks. They are the wheels that came with the truck. As soon as I do the five lug conversion I'm going to try and get some astro supremes.

*chuckles* do I hear a big hint to your parents for your christmas present??? Let me check around and see what is available to CL for welders. I might just pick up a 110 volt mig setup ifn I can find one reasonable enough.

Sean, it's definitely on the wishlist. But I don't if I can hold off that long before I end up buying one myself. My brother and I are planning on putting the motor and transmission out of the truck into a rat rod project this summer which will have quite a bit of metal fab. He has a cheap Harbor Freight welder that's fine for small odds and ends, but we want to invest in something a little better that we can do frames and stuff with. Also, he's gone for the next couple of weeks so I wont even be able to have access to his welder till after I will already have the firewall done.

How well does the harbor freight one do for body work? I am looking at em thinking i dont need much since I am not doing any major fab on mine just body panel repair and such. Will keep eyeballing CL might come up with something.

He's got a 90 amp flux core, I think. It welds OK, I've never tried it on body panels though. Also, I'm not very good at the flux core welding. If you don't have it set up perfect it can give you some pretty nasty welds with a lot of slag. I would like to get small Hobart Handler 140 MIG or a small Lincoln for sheet metal. Hobarts are fairly cheep and pretty good welders.

was researching diff welders and think I found one lol will have to spend some body work money getting it but damm its sweet. millermatic 211 auto weld, 115/230 volt changeable up to 3/8 inch steel welds 1k
will need something that heavy eventually for my 16k lb yard tractor plans!

Yesterday I was outside working on the truck some more, since the weather is soo nice right now. I got some more wet sanding done and also I decided to play with some new parts that have been sitting in the garage for over a year now.


Here's my new tailgate and roll pan. The tailgate is just sitting there. It is such a tight fit cause of alignment issues that I need to figure out. The roll pan is clamped on in the pictures. Im about to head outside to bolt it up and mess with the tailgate some more.




I'm not quite sure why this gap is there on the side of the roll pan. It's on both sides. Anyway, it's going to get a filler plate welded in when I get back up to the shop.


This tab is kind of weird too. I guess its it is there to match up with the bedsides?, but it doesn't even match up really. I have no clue. That's probably going to get cut off because its pretty ugly and doesn't show any purpose to me.

I just read your thread... Good looking Truck, hope you are still into it, your posts look a little old.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your #6 cylinder?
With the beat up spark plug it sounded like either a blown piston head, or a broken valve that dropped down in there.
When you find stuff like that, it is always a good idea to check your oil.
If it smells ALOT like gasoline and lights up with a cigarette lighter, then you have some engine rebuilding to do and probably should not drive it at all until you get that done.

Sorry it's been a while. Been traveling all over the country and then came back and have been working like crazy ever since. I did manage to build up a hefty savings for my "Truck Fund" for when I do find free time to work on the truck Sadly, not a whole lot has been done to the truck since the last post though. It seems like one problem after another with the original motor, so it hasn't been driven very much I did manage to take off a week of work to spend completely on the truck a couple months ago. I got the body work on the bed, done and it re-primed. So just got to finish up the wet sanding and pull the front clip off, pull the motor, and "clean" up the firewall. If I can get pictures uploaded, I'll post some of the bed hopefully tonight.

Here's a picture of the bed. It doesn't look like much, but to me this was a huge accomplishment getting the bed primed. Now I am in the process of getting it all wet sanded.

Finally getting back to working on the truck. Just moved into a new shop and house and able to work on the truck more. I'll try and post some pictures of my progress up as soon as possible, but I don't have Internet at my house yet, so I have to post from my phone for now. But here's a description of what's been done since the last post.

Got the wiring harness under the dash pretty much all out and interior gutted. Speaking of, is there and "easy" way of getting those wire connectors out of the firewall? Although not done today, I got the motor out and front clip off. Next I'm going to the firewall all cleaned up and fill all of the unnecessary holes. I would like to take the dash out but it looks like it is spot welded in.

Hey Jeremy, You asked about removing the dash. There is an easy way, but it requires a lot of time with an air chisel; something you'd probably not want to bother with.
It seems like it is that way with all of GMs trucks. You want to get the dash out you've got to chisel off the cab around it!
