Anyone ever see a stepbumper like this ?

I’m planing on putting a class 4 or 5 hitch on my 72 I knew my bumper was a little strange but not like this . It’s built like a tank all 1/4 inch plates and 3/16 square tube from my measurements and it’s mounted in the front and rear frame holes the hitch would mount too. So I’d have to remove it completely and devise brackets for the bumper. Thinking I may just bring it to my welding guy who does custom fabrications . Have him weld in some more square stock and add a 2” receiver tube and call it a day .

Re: Anyone ever see a stepbumper like this ?

That is interesting, almost like you can pull the bumper out to make a step up to the open tailgate.

Re: Anyone ever see a stepbumper like this ?

I’m thinking it was for a long in bed camper. The bumper had a swing down step on it too. PO insisted on keeping it

To slide it I had to loosen these cinch bolts

I’d keep it just for the uniqueness factor. You used to see them often by me years ago.

Re: Anyone ever see a stepbumper like this ?

I got a similar one with a '67 Custom Camper that I used to have. It slides out to become the step for whatever length of slide-in camper you have in the bed. Biggest difference is that mine slid under the frame rails.

I guess there was multible configurations. I may slide it out the full 3 or 4 feet and say it's an anti tailgater bumper.

Re: Anyone ever see a stepbumper like this ?

There was a slide-out bumper mount offered, I think, as an RPO option. It was how it was done back then for campers with tail section

This shows the one that my '71 Custom Camper had

I want one that slides out at the push of a button and whacks the car tailgating me , then retracts back in like nothing happened.

With a spike in the middle that will pierce the grille, AC condenser and the radiator.

Had one on my 69' GMC K2500, 10'5" overhead camper. Welded a 2" receiver on bumper and tow our boat.

I had one on my 71 C20. Believe they were aftermarket only, not aware of a production slide-out, but ya never know. Tim, any idea the RPO?

Nice call I'd say. Very cool set-up.

Re: Anyone ever see a stepbumper like this ?

As already mentioned, that is an extendable bumper for a camper that appears to have been reinforced for more capacity.

Here are a couple pictures which show the one I had the dealer install when we purchased the truck in 1969. I have modified it several times for use on a 1986 Chevrolet dually and 1999 Ford F-350 as well as to add a hitch and capacity. It was last used with the original camper in 2001.

Mine was no factory. I checked for an RPO and didn't see it. But I did see an RPO for chrome rear step bumper? RPO VF2 Chrome R-Step Bumperhrome? Never seen one. Is that something else?

I commuted 47 miles one way to work for many years. I had plenty of time to think about what I would have liked to do, but never did any of them.

I don’t think there is a factory slide-out bumper.

Right. I said I wasn't sure and then I checked and posted I didn't find an RPO for one. My question is does anyone know what that VF2 chrome rear step bumper option is, or has anyone seen one before

Re: Anyone ever see a stepbumper like this ?

I've got a 69 GMC C2500 parts truck that has one of those. It's made with pipe or round tube sliders rather than square. Pretty neat idea for the slide in camper.
