What is this

I sprayed DTM Epoxy on my cowl today.
I took the cowl to bare metal.
I cleaned it with thinner, W&G remover until the rag came up clean.
I tacked clothed before spraying.

I have some weird spots showing through. Should I sand and repaint? Cover with highbuild and forget it?

any idea what it is? the surface is smooth where the spots are.






The rest looks pretty good for my first time painting.

Did you use stripper? Looks from the pic[but kinda hard to tell] might be stripper residue. That stuff is hard to deactivate and has no rhyme or reason to where or why it leaves residue like it does or when it does, I just don't know there is some unknown variable like humidity or temp that has not been taken into consideration.If it is not stripper, I might need a different look at the pics but in a rush now leaving for church. I did use stripper on it. it sucked and was a mess so I sanded the rest off. Im pretty sure I sand blasted those areas as well as all the cleaning I did. (obviously not enough)

so what now? sand it off and hit those spots with more epoxy?

If it it stripper underneath there it will make that primer pop which will in turn make everything you put on top of the primer pop. I would resand and then thoroughly wash it off to deactivate the stripper. That's exactly how otherwise good paint jobs end up coming off the vehicle in sheets. Good job on noticing it. Just pay close attention anywhere you used paint stripper.

its possible I guess. I didn't hose down the cowl with water like I did with the hood. doh. Always learning something.

side note. anybody used the 3M PPS system? Cleaning the gun is no big deal but trying to get the pot clean seems like a losing battle.

Ok, Class is everyone paying attention? This man used the stripper on his parts and he did what most would do to deactivate the stripper, wipe it down with thinner. Then after the thinner evaped, he went to the next logical step WGR and wiped it and did that until the rag came back clean.
I know that I climb up on my thinner bucket [no really I do that] and preach to you guys about the prep involved. I get somewhere between 4 to 10 questions a week ether on here or in PM form I guess because the people have seen I will take time with them to work out any problem they have, and to them it may be huge when to the guys that do it every day it is a small thing. Prep is the most important thing to get any satisfaction and this man did everything seeminly right but stuff happens. Now to fix it I would sand it back with 120 then go out about three or four inches past that area since it is small and contained, scrub with soap and water then WGR and then reapply the epoxy primer. If you sand over what you have and then try to prime again it may lay down and be have, for a while probably until the clear is on about three or four weeks. Think of the sick in the stomach feeling that would give. One other quick thing if I can ever say anything quick, don't let your WGR dry on the panels wipe it on then with another clean separate towel take it back off. Jim

After you stripped it off to bare steel were you handling it with your bare hands or wearing gloves? The big blob in the middle looks like a hand print and if your skin was dirty or you have naturally oily skin it went right into the steel. Always wear either nitryl gloves or latex to prevent the oils in your skin from adding contaminates to the surface. W&G remover tends to pull it out of your skin as well.

When she does that Cal, smile and wave and say love you too honey. I think that might be the best way and then when she goes back inside clean it again and just get a do over. They are worth it, or at least mine sure is. You can pick up those powder free gloves at just about any parts store and they are cheap like 100 pair for $15. They are great for when mixing filler, or primer or anytime that your close to anything that you would not want on you or you touching the truck. But it is a good idea once in a while to unglove to allow your hand a chance to "breathe" a bit because I can tell if I have been in mine a little long. Of course it looks like overstuffed sausage caseings when I wear them. I have like a size 18 ring finger. Jim

i always was wearing gloves from when I started cleaning it. But now that I think about it they may have been powdered. duh. But they suck anyway, rip and thinner eats them so Im going to go get some more of the thicker blue ones before doing anything else.
