5.7 oil pressure sending unit

Okay, my oil gauge has been pegged for a long time and after having to swap the one in the Jeep last week I figured that it was disconnected.

So I finally have a look and it's really tight up in there above the oil filter but I stuck my fingers up there and the yellow wire either broke off or had been broke off and I just moved it so it's dangling now.

The existing sending unit which is probably original doesn't look like anything listed on O'Reilly's. It seems to have some sort of slotted "cup" covering the whole thing including wherever the wire is supposed to attach. I don't know if this cover is supposed to be removable, but it looks like you couldn't get it off anyway without unscrewing the unit from the engine and prying some tabs back ?

This is the one I found:
https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c...7#applications

Does that look right to you all ?????

There's no cover for the blade connector other that whatever might be on the other end of the broken wire which I can't see any of because it's inside the slotted cover described above.

I guess I need to just order a new sending unit and then butt splice a wire addition and the female connector that goes on the end of the wire...?

That's an old school oil sending unit used before they integrated a fuel pump relay in to them, so it should be the correct one. What model and year truck?

Yes that looks right for early TBI trucks which had it down by the oil filter.

If it is modified from what came stock from the factory, let us know that too.

The one currently on the pickup doesn't look like that at all, other than the part that threads into the engine. From the tapered neck back it's completely covered with some sort of sheet metal cylinder (that I called a "cup") and you can't see or get to the wire connection at all. It's got a slot or slots that the wire went into and disappeared, before I touched it and either broke it completely or just moved it out of the way.

So I'm trying to figure if the cover is supposed to pop off to access the connector ??? But there's not much room and you would need to slide it back up the wire somehow (assuming it wasn't broken) just to disconnect/connect the wire. I'm wondering if it was intended as some sort of heat shield?

I just though maybe someone here had seen something like that and would know how to deal with it?

The sending unit could be just fine if I could get it reconnected, but how? Probably I just need to buy a new one, plus a matching female connector to splice onto the end of the old wire.

Does it look like this one? https://www.amazon.com/Kuryakyn-8136.../dp/B000WJX5YW

Could be someone replaced it with something similar.

Somewhat similar to that but not so shiny and fancy. Mine looks like the cover might be crimped or something at the base (towards the engine) to hold it on to the core of the sending unit.

So apparently the sending unit on my pickup is not GM original? I guess that figures ... the guy that had it before (I bought it from his ex-wife) was pretty wacky, used wrong parts and put things together wrong on all sorts of stuff. For instance, I had it a little before I discovered that the main through bolt was missing from the motor mount on one side

I just thought there must be some sort of trick to it that I was not seeing. So I guess I will order a new sending unit and hopefully find a female connector that I can crimp or splice into the end of the existing broken wire <sigh>

Re: 5.7 oil pressure sending unit

The connector can either be the female spade connector or you can get a ring type connector if you get a sending unit that has a post. Then it will bolt on instead of push on.

Get a connector that crimps and has heat shrink surround, or add the heat shrink tube. That will help make it last.

Okay, thanks

I think I will wait and walk in to order it, and make sure they have some sort of connector in stock that will work.

I don't know about doing heat shrink up in that tight spot? Or maybe just slip it over the wire and let the exhaust heat shrink it ???
