Re: Not another build thread! Progress on my '67

Another of the gate on the truck...

This was a "counterparts" tailgate. Not sure if that's tri-plus or not (I don't think it is?) and I was very happy with the gage, fit and quality of the gate. Now I can't say the same for ALL counterparts parts, but the tailgate was nice

Edit: I don't know what's up with my camera, it took several "crappy/blurry" pics this weekend??? I didn't change any settings...

The final thing I did this weekend was sand sand sand and sand some more on the rear fenders. They ain't perfect, but they are a dang good driver quality

They have two heavy coats of primer, a lot of bondo, and lots of hours sanding.

Heres the painted pics

That fuel filler door goes right here in the fender! Here's some pics of it put back together. It sits nice and flush with the fender after some adjustments.

Re: Not another build thread! Progress on my '67

I didn't have time to get the fenders on the truck this weekend. I didn't finish painting until 11 am this morning and I was too pooped to do anything else. The tailgate hinges were still wet too, so they aren't on the truck either. Don't worry, there's a towel between the bumper and tailgate I cleaned up my uncle's garage super nice and put the fenders in the bed for the time being.

Next time I'll repaint the backside of them (black), put the fenderwelt on and get 'em on the truck! This won't be for a couple weeks though, I have prior commitments with Jena (it's our 3 year anniversary (of dating) September 26th.) So she has me for the next two weekends the other woman will have to wait for her new tires and tranny

Re: Not another build thread! Progress on my '67

I would like to thank everyone so much for the encouragements and good will. I would also like to be honest with everyone here and be the first to say that this paintjob is NOT as nice as the pictures. It was intended to be a daily driver job and it has turned out to be so. There's a wave here and there, a bunch of bugs, and I even managed to put a couple chips in it that I've already filled in. I just don't want anyone to think I've done something amazing. It's nothing more than something any of you could do at home yourselves. I'm not cutting myself short either, I'm still very proud of my truck and paintjob, but to be honest, it's a 10 footer

Thanks for everything peeps. I'll keep updating as I get more parts/tranny/wheels and interior finished...

Edit....what did y'all think of my spray booth and parts hangers???

Looks great to me!

I would rather have a good paint job I did myself than a great paint job I paid someone to do on my driver. But I take a lot of pride in doing everything I can do myself on my rig.

Great job on it. Looks like you got some of the same parts hangers I do.

I hope to be playing with my spray gun soon too.

I would never paint inside without proper ventilation (which this garage doesn't have.) Plus, I didn't feel like covering everything up in the garage to keep overspray off of it. If you paint the the morning, columbia typically has really nice weather, at least until 4 or 5 then there might be a quick pop up shower, but I could touch the parts and put them in the garage by then.

Yup, Martins paint, single stage urethane. The only thing I wish I had done different was no metalic, I didn't know you couldn't wetsand urethane metallic. Otherwise, good stuff.

I got a "new" (to me) tilt column. Pretty good deal on it. Everything is tight, but I think I'm going to replace a few things on it, take it apart and repaint it.

Just to help clarify the wetsanding thing. You can not wetsand a single stage metallic because you will sand the metallic and it will look like crap. You can sand single stage solid colors though. I just thought i would help clarify your comment. By the way you doing a great job! I really like how you did you gas cap! Keep up the good work!

Yeah, I think the owner of martin's paint is a member here? He replied to my wetsanding question a couple months ago and said the same thing you did... why oh why did I need to have the sparklies? I now wish I hadn't gone metallic, but NAPA didn't charge me "extra" for it, so I said, what the heck, why not?

Thanks man I like how it came out too. It should line right up with the tanks filler neck. This could only be done on a fleetside or a stepside with shaved markers (and of course original 67's). Not something someone would notice right away, but that's what I like about it.

Those will look great on the truck. Give us the current status, what all is left to do? You haven't touched the interior yet, right?

No real updates. The truck is in Columbia (a couple hours from me) so when I update this thread it's usually when I have spent a weekend there. I have a tranny on order, should be in today, I'm taking friday off work and heading to columbia thursday night to get the rear fenders back on, all the lights on and working, swap out the trannies (already had a 700R4 in it, so it should be a few hour swap) and THEN get all of the bowtie OD stuff in and working, get the exhaust hung properly again, get the fuel lines and filler neck done, put the seat and seatbelts back in it, get the new tires on..... and ummmm..... smoke the living piss out of them

Crap, that's a lot of stuff..... I may need another weekend

Re: Not another build thread! Progress on my '67

Back to COLA once again! Started this weekend off by working friday morning when I was told I could have it off earlier in the week. Oh well, my christmas bonus had better be real nice this year.... doesn't hurt to kiss a lil ass now and then, does it?

Anyway, back to the truck, I painted the backside of my fenders...again... and then on saturday morning used sticky adhesive spray to put fender welts on my fenders. I know some people say they promote rust.... eh, oh well. There were on my truck for 10 years and rust wasn't an issue. The fun part was cutting out the holes.

Re: Not another build thread! Progress on my '67

Ooops, I lied, the first thing I did was install my new rims/tires!!!! I actually drove the truck to school for a year with the rear tires in the second pic. You do some stupid things when you ain't got no money They look worse in person, they are REALLY dry rotted. I'm not even sure how they held air?

Re: Not another build thread! Progress on my '67

I got my transmission from an undisclosed location. I don't wish to disclose where I got it from until I have a few K on it, so don't ask, I won't answer.

Yup, it's a 700R4. I forgot to takes pics of the one I pulled out. Looks just like this one, just dirtier. I also installed a bowtie overdrives TV made EZ kit and their lock-up kit. I already had a 700R4 in the truck, so no further mods were necessary. This took me most of the weekend as I didn't have the proper tools. IE a lift, trans jack, and any other tool that makes this pain in the ass job go easier. All I had were a couple of POS jacks, jackstands, and hand tools. Good thing I only weighed 165lbs, my skinny ass barely fit under the truck. I also spent some time getting the exhaust hung again. No more rubbing the driveshaft!

I took the truck for a test drive. Only about 4 miles. It was a BLAST! I freaked out at first cause I only had 3 gears, but then I realized my lokar shifter was only in 3 I highly recommend LOKAR shifters, VERY nice product! I'm afraid of driving it anymore until I get a trans pressure gage and check the pressures. May need to adjust the TV cable. Don't want to burn up another one. But the shifts did feel good.

On a side note, my dumb ass broke the retainer clip for the speedometer gear. OF COURSE NO ONE CARRIES IT BUT GM. GM IS CLOSED ON SATURDAYS! I'm going to have to take my tailshaft back apart and put it in so I have a functioning speedometer again.

Re: Not another build thread! Progress on my '67

Once the fenders were on, it looked like a truck again. I liked how the fuel filler door came out on the truck. It blends right in.
