Big Block Downpipes

Where can I find downpipes for my 69 396?

I'm using the stock exhaust manifolds.

Any exhaust shop can make them.

Re: Big Block Downpipes

Am I thinking of something different then just a pipe with a 2 or 3 bolt flange that bolts to the manifold and then is bent to mate up with the rest of the exhaust?

Yes that is what he is asking about.
I hate going to exhaust shops, just bad experiences there and would rather buy the correctly bent piece.
And if I order the right part I don't have to drive or trailer the truck to the exhaust shop with open exhaust.

I'm well aware that any muffler shop can make some pipes with crushed bends, but I'm hoping I can find some nice madrel bent factory made pipes.

Pypes, Flowmaster and other companies have them for 60's & 70's Chevy big block cars, but I haven't found them for our trucks.

I've got an email out to Pypes Performance Exhaust. I'll share what they tell me.

Why so serious...everyone seems to get quickly bent outta shape over stupid crap here. Just laugh and move on... A down pipe is what connects the exhaust to the outlet of a turbo in the most normal essence of the word.

here is a diagram with part numbers from napa, they should easily cross to walker. if you need it bigger PM me with your e-mail and I'll forward it.

Walker uses the same diagram and numbers, unfortunately those are only the numbers for clamps, hangers, gaskets and mufflers. No pipe numbers. I did email Walker and I called Napa. Napa doesn't offer it and they told me to try The Truck Shop. The Truck Shop doesn't have them.

Jegs does have this downpipe, it looks close in the photos and they offer free shipping. Maybe it's close a enough fit, that a little tweaking would make it work.

Pypes responded to my email and said that the don't offer a downpipe for our trucks.

On those cars the RH exhaust manifold is the same, the left is different but close. I have been thinking of using these pipes. I just bought corvette exhaust manifolds though and they sweep down and back so now that I have those they wont work, if you try them post up with the results.

When I lived in Pierce County eons ago, I used to take my rigs to Walt's on Pacific Avenue... they always did a great job installing custom exhausts.

Or if you have access to a welder and have a bit of skilz, you could order the flange you need and then buy a stick of pipe in the diameter you want and also a couple of 45's or some 90's and cut and weld it up yourself.

I recently used this in my 71 with a 402. They tucked in nicely in the frame rails. The passenger side fits perfect. The driver side fits if you use a short filter or you can easily modify the driverside with one cut and reweld.

That is great to hear. Did you modify the pipe or use a shorter filter? Do you have any photos?

Re: Big Block Downpipes

Reviving an old thread with a similar question, Looking for downpipes for a '68 396 factory manifolds...???

I'm simply looking for a economical ($300-$500 range) functional exhaust, does not need to be full factory. I 'thought' I'd find a system, use what I need and go from there, but this is proving a bit more of a challenge.

Short of trying to find a shop to make something (as in $$$) I'm probably going to piece it together myself. I'm fine with this, but I've not yet been able to find downpipes (396 w/manifolds).

Does anyone know of any source?

Thanks,
Kevin

Adding, I am aware that it appears the original poster may have opted for the Pypes downpipes, but I'm not sure I'm keen on going with a shorter filter.
I am also aware companies like Waldron's make a full system, but I'd rather not end up spending close to $800 for a system.

A photo of the truck, where exhaust currently exits front of rear tires under utility bed (where I am planning to keep it):

Re: Big Block Downpipes

When I did my truck, the only people that I found that supplied dual exhaust down pipes for our big block trucks was Waldron Exhaust in Michigan. They made me 2 1/2" exhaust pipes for mine, that I cut off behind the cab, and adapted to a 2 1/4" muffler system that I bought from LMC I think. Waldrons is usually backed up, and it takes awhile for them to make a run of any certain pipe, so I had to wait awhile for them.
