tranny is in car still so i cant measure and am not gonna pull if its not same length, so, hmmm., catch 22 here,,,

Yes, 2004R transmissions are the same length as a 350 turbo. I used to have an El-camino that came out with a 200. I changed to a 350 and then back to the 200 again with no driveshaft mods. Good luck getting a 200 to hold up for very long under your truck. That's a lot more weight than the tranny was designed for and any towing will probably be out of the question.

Naaa, the Caprice should be heavier than a 1/2 ton truck. I wouldn't put it behind a powerhouse of an engine...onless it is a turbo Buick 200 tranny...

Here's a little info i just stumbled across while reading in my magazine chair. (yes...the crapper)
TH350 short shaft Main case length,21 5/8...overall lenth, 27 5/8
TH2004R Main case length, 27 3/4...overall length, 27 3/4
The 2.74:1 first gear is a little steeper than the 3.06:1 first in the 700 R4, but this will keep the RPMs a little closer when you hit second gear. The OD gear in the 200 4R is 0.67:1, while the 700 has the 0.70:1 for the final ratio. It is argured which is stronger, and which is better, but I have yet to see anything as far as proof.
The main problem you'll have putting a 200 4R in place of a TH350, is the mounting pad placement is 6 inches further back on the 200 verses the 350. On some cars, you can flip the cross member around front for back, but I don't think it'll be an issue for you...you'll drill new holes if needed. (plus, the mount is centered in the cross member on ours).
'86 - '88 is reported to be the stronger of the 2 over drives, but personally I kinda wonder about that. Other than the turbo Buicks, they are not, nor ever were in a high horse power aplication, and a turbo does not shock the tranny with butt loads of power, rather after the vehicle is moving. (onless you know how to spool it up before launching)
A huge bonus on the 200, is that it uses the same standard flexplate and 27 spline slip yolk as the TH350.
This is taken from April 2002 Chevy High Performance.

guys im talking about the 200 not the 2004r.........
im talkinf 3 speed auto not 4 speed auto, i mean the ones with one piece case- IE., non removeable tailshaft housing, and no modulator valve- are these same dimensions as a short tail th350 like in our trucks and in cars ?
Sheenanny you dont know what youre talking about, you go and talk to the caddy racing guys at MTS about the 2004r and then you come back here and tell me what they said, you dont evne want to know the engines they run in front of their 200r4's

please help on length Q?

thanks,,,

The 200c and 200r4 are the same length, but have different rear mounts, as I put one in my camaro, I mickey moused the mount. This site has everything you want to know about GM auto trannys, especially the 200R4. I'm running one in my panel with a 3.07 rear!, love it. Lengths are listed here too, but I think one was wrong, not sure.

yeah i figure it'd have to be same length and tail splien of a th350 or 2004r.
i had one out of a 79 caprice last year i used to have and i swear it was short 350 length and all, just wasnt positive just recently.
dopesnt matter that its not as built as any other auto was, it will work though, i dont have any th350,l and plus this oe is remanufactured

that site link you provided is a good one,. interesting info on the TH325-4L
and did not know were three lengths of th400, thought were only two, 34 and 29.... hmmm.... have had one of each at least but not of whatever the third is...
hmmmm.....

thanks guys, i need to yank the trans am drivetrain out and get that tranny ready for the 71 truck sometimes soon then,.
