"Most for the money" performance addition to a 5.3 '00 Sierra

Hey guys, im basically lookin at all kinda stuff to get for the now mine '00 sierra 5.3 ext cab step. I was wonderin if anyone kne what the best performance addition i can get for the price? Could just be spark plugs, or exhaust, throttle body spacer, intake, whatever. I installed a mini arduino based microcntroller that calculates all my mpg and fuel use and crap for me, so once i do get the uprgrade, i can tell u what it does for gas mileage anyway. The main thing im lookin for is improved gas mileage, which normally comes along with an increase in power. Any suggestions? Thanks...

BRAD

Cold air intake, exhaust, and a PCM tune (not a handheld tuner).

After that, heads and a cam.

Re: "Most for the money" performance addition to a 5.3 '00 Sierra

Nice thanks....appreciate it. Im lookin at stuff, i should have a couple hundred extra moneys by the middle of august, so im hopin to grab somethin. First thing is most likely a cold air intake, but maybe exhaust instead. The only thing i dont exactly like is that the exhaust i want says not recommended for heavy towing, and although me and my dad dont do too much towing, i dont wanna switch until he gets his new truck, hopefully soon. Im thinkin the gibson super truck system. Anyone kno if this sounds good?

Can't remember the magazine that posted this, but there was an article that had dyno numbers from JUST a cam change, albeit a radical cam, that gave the 5.3 an additional 96 horsepower. I think if you put in a mild cam you should be able to gain 40 hp and close to that in torque AND gain mileage. I think all the other stuff would be better first and then the cam, just as Glock said.

Let me know if I can help.
The best things are CAI, tuning by a good shop, Catback or just a muffler and some headers.

I wouldn't waste a bunch of money on a full Gibson exhaust system. If you want to go all out then get a set of long tube headers (lt's) and mufflers of your choice. Check out performancetrucks.net for vendors.

Well if you want a good tune it comes down to the tuner.

Justin over at Blackbear seems to be one of the best mail order tuners you can get.

About the same as most other places.
$200-$420 depending on options.

I have been doing mail order tunes for $175 for non cam'd vehicles.
