Replacing/adjusting brake pedal switch?

My son's 67 C10's original brake switch finally went out (we think). Symptom was that the brake lights were on all the time, eventually killing the battery. Jiggling the switch would make them go off, but not reliably.

I bought a new switch, but for the life of me cannot figure out just how I'll be able to physically get the old one out and the new one in, much less 'adjust' it. I've already taken the instrument cluster out, but the brake switch is located in a channel bolted to the firewall and there doesn't seem to be a way to reach it.

Any tricks, tips or suggestions (even if just the best way to lay upside down in the cab on the floor while working on it!) would be appreciated!

It is a major pita to change as you need to be a contortionist. Iirc there is a sheetmetal nut that is used as a "back up" to hd the position once it is adjusted correctly.

Indeed. Thusfar I've only succeeded in completely loosening the top nut. Can't hold the bottom one and turn the switch (easier than the other way around?). Steering column, etc are severely blocking access, not to mention vision...hmmm.

I dropped the steering column when I replaced mine to give me more access to the switch.

I probably should have in hindsight. Finally got the old one out and the new one started back in...call 911 if you don't hear from me in a week or so!

Done. Brakes happy again. Still need to button it all up (dash, etc.) but some of that needed a little tweaking anyway. It actually can be done. (BTW, masking tape does a good job of substituting for an extra hand in a place you couldn't even get all of one hand into.)
