New steering wheel

It wasn't much fun trying to get the old steering wheel off until I bought the right tool for the job. One thing for sure I had to custom engineer the Grant horn assembly parts because they just wouldn't work.Name: 1-IMG_20130803_182143_384.jpg

Good looking wheel. Where did you get it? I need one and I like the looks of that one.

The grant adapter parts really do suck.

I found this one on Ebay. I tried the parts houses for old Chevy trucks but this same one was always out of stock.

Re: New steering wheel

I just installed a Grant 969 w/ the blue bowtie today,i reamed the hub assembly with a cylindrical grinding stone from home depot. The install kit is 3126,and I picked it up at pep boys. Now the first one I tried to intall on my 67 column didn't go so well so I bought a Flamming River column from pick-um-up (Frank) for a really good price ,and it came with a FR horn contact. The only thing I had to do was change the horn contact connector. It works perfect.

If there was a "Like" button on this forum i'd use it on your post!

Grant Horn hardware just bites, the fiber disk wears out and the assy pulls apart and the horn goes off all on its own, even in the middle of the night......

Guess I better mount some kind of "make and break" switch under the hood in case that happens to mine. Doesn't seem like that fiber disc has to move much unless you have to lay on the horn a lot. I noticed though that the fiber near one of the shoulder bolts was already starting to crack just from shipping. Grrrrr

I put in a Flaming River column this weekend with their adapter and horn contact. I still have the Grant fiber disk and horn button, and I had to re-drill the steering wheel for it to line up right. But it is 300% of the Grant design.

Re: New steering wheel

I got the same wheel and like it a lot. I bought mine off of amazon for a fraction of the cost at other places. I am finding amazon to have many parts with free shipping. Good for things like bumpers which are next on my list.

I was unable to get the horn to work on mine at all. I agree the parts do suck.

Looks great!!!

When they tell you in the instructions to take out the existing rod like plunger and replace it with theirs it took me awhile to figure out what they meant. I actually threw their new spring away and reused the original Chevy spring in the horn contact assembly. What frosted me was I couldn't get their little plastic cap to cover their new rod like plunger because the termination on the end of the Grant wire had no place to go. Then I got the brain storm to put the little rod in a vise and drill about an 1/8 inch hole about a 1/4 inch deep in the rod plunger and the termination on their horn wire fit in there perfectly. I should have taken some pics. Anyway the horn works fine but their instructions suck! LOL

I borrowed one too but the bolts were too short so I got this kit at China Freight.
http://www.harborfreight.com/46-piec...set-69889.html

The only problem with this puller is that the yoke or whatever you call it has 4 slots. You have to use the two slots opposite of each other and it won't quite fit so you have to take a round file or die grinder and remove about 1/32 of an inch on both slots towards where the large jack screw is. Once I did that and used some of their longer bolts in the kit it popped right off. Although at first when it came free I freaked out thinking that I broke or stripped something but it was just coming loose on the steering shaft.

thanks for linking your thread.
From what I've read it looks great and the wheel and your truck certainly do.
The thread will be a good reference for me when I'm replacing my wheel.
Your old one looks like mine now , cracked a bit different though

Talking Re: New steering wheel

The easy way to stop the horn is to just unplug it. It's just a slip on connection on the front of the drivers side wheel well.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
