I own "an old truck."

At least according to the girl working at the cell phone place. I went in to get a new cell phone (only after mine stopped charging) to replace my 2011 model and in conversation, my truck came up. When I told her what year it was I got this: "41 years old? That's an old truck."

I told her I actually wanted a 1967 model next.....

Bah, that's not old. We have an 84 Fiero my wife bought new. Her first brand spanking new car. We stopped driving it probably over 20 years ago. Its buried in the black berries.

When I registered and got the plates for my '31 Ford Model A, the ladies working at the DMV got all flustered and said "...that's the oldest car we've ever seen!"

I told them they need to get out more.

During Woodward Cruise "week" a couple years ago my son said "hey, Dad - can I take your truck to work today?"

Apparently Dad's old truck is cooler than his VW wagon, so I said sure.

Well - his boss had just gotten a new BMW of some kind so folks were walking in all day and asking about it. By the end of the day the receptionist had developed a little spiel: "Well, that's Dave's. It's a BMW M whatever blah blah blah".

My son happened to be standing there and overheard this conversation when one of his buddies walked in:

Buddy: "Hey - what's that sitting out there?"

Receptionist: "Well, that's Dave's. It's a BMW... -"

Buddy: "No, not that! I'm talkin about that old truck sitting out there!"

(lol)

Apparently Dad's old truck was cooler than the BMW, too.

I've bought antiques and vintage items since I was in high school. I just like the old stuff. Naturally you take good care of such things because they are special. We all need to buy some things new and I guess I take good care of that stuff just as well. Not long ago I was looking at some of my stuff that I bought new and still use when I realized it's considered an antique. That's pretty bad when you realize "The stuff I bought new is now antique!". What does THAT make you??? (don't answer)

Having an old truck just makes life easier. When it breaks down it can only be one or two things. Now as for a 2014 car or truck and it brakes down. Look out bank account! Sh!t just hit the fan. And just the fact that old trucks and cars look waaaaay better than any new vehicle.

The wife and I were going on a camping/party/tubing trip in New Hampshire a while ago and I suggested we take the 67 GMC camper cruiser I had recently gotten on the road. Let me back up and say the trip was organized by the wifes friend and the friends family and included all their friends we didn't know. Well the wife was mortified at the idea of everyone seeing us arrive in an ''old truck'' but I insisted. The whole way there on the highway people were pulling up on the side and giving us the ''thumbs up'' or yelling ''nice truck'' and waving. When we got there and parked among the beamers and all the new SUV's ,people instantly started asking who's truck is that and wow where did you find that and boy I always wanted one of those. All night people kept going over to check it out and ask questions about it. The wife sure was surprised and I was never happier.

I've had a few people ask me why I drive an older truck over the years. I usually start by explaining that it's not because I'm poor, but rather a choice.

I prefer older trucks in much the same way I prefer older women. A little patina, aged well, classic look that brings back a lot of memories. Don't get me wrong, I still like the new models too. We all like to go down to the dealership every now and then and check out the headlights on the new models, admire the tight rear end gear ratios and take in that "new car" smell.

As a 17 year old and a senior in Hs I'm constantly questioned why I'm buildin an "old piece of sh*t truck" and then when I have to fix their civics in the parking lot, they understand. They're reliable (for the most part ) and they're just plain cool. There's nothing really like being able to do a 20 ft burnout down the street in front of school, and they can't do that in their civics and focus'. Only 3 people in our 2015 class drive rwd cars, me with either the Camaro or cougar, my friend Corey with a gbody Monte and aly with a fox body. Its sad how American muscle and muscle trucks are disappearing from school lots.

I'll take my 1969 over my 1980 BMW 320I...but not by much, now that I removed that malfunctioning fuel injection system and replaced it with a carburetor.

What I love about my OLD truck...

It's a left hooker in a right hook world.
It has that old school V8 rumbling sound.
It's grouse to cruise around in.
It gets comments and "thumbs up" from 7 year olds to 85 year old Grannies!!
People love to come up and talk about it. A 5 minute trip to get milk sometimes takes an hour.
It's a driving car/truck. Not a cocooned auto pilot lounge-room on wheels.
It's old, it's cool, it's agricultural, and I can always find it in the shopping centre car park.
She is easy to work on and if ever I need to work on her, especially under the bonnet, if I ever drop a tool... I only have to wait a second to hear it fall on the ground! Try that with a modern car.

And best of all...It never fails to make me smile inside when I drive it!
