NOS parts thoughts

Just checking everyone's thoughts here. A seller on ebay has quite a few small parts listed as NOS and shows the parts with the GM packaging. However, it is very clear you don't get any original packaging with the item. Some of these would not have a part number on the actual part and hard to verify if it is GM or not.
Would you be comfortable buying as NOS in that situation?

I wouldn't. Sounds a little suspect to me.

Re: NOS parts thoughts

You probably don't get the packaging so he can save it for the next "NOS" part to be photographed with it.

Hard to judge for sure, but definitely sounds suspicious.

Re: NOS parts thoughts

For myself, it would depend upon the part. Some parts were bulk packaged and I can see selling a single piece or a pair for example rather than the whole lot. The glass grommets for the vent window glass and dome light lenses are some examples that come to mind.

Re: NOS parts thoughts

If the seller is comfortable selling parts that are NOT NOS as a trick...then the aftermarket parts they have sourced must be quality parts. IF that is the case then there are good aftermarket parts available to you as well. Should you be desiring NOS parts for a concourse build then hold out for better documentation/proof.

This theory all falls apart if they are the worst of the worst scammers and don;t care if you catch on, however.

This is exactly what I would think and would avoid it. Back in the early days of Ebay I did a lot of buying and selling there but it's a scammers paradise now.

Re: NOS parts thoughts

I would check feedback for sure on the seller, but also make 100% certain you can return the items if not as described, if you move forward with purchasing. Too many crooks on ebay anymore, and we are at their mercy most often.

Even though I have had some metal parts from a larger GM box like brake cable connectors & a couple other parts, I do not trust the non gm part #. I think that usually when that is the case it seems that an aftermarket item is out there that is as good as what they sell. Be especially leery of just a picture of a GM Box with GM insignia and no part #. All bulk items I have seen have a part # on the box.

If there asking NOS price and you can't verify it is, then past on it. Another one will show up.

Re: NOS parts thoughts

I'm inclined to go along with those who say be a bit suspicious if the part should come individually boxed.

To me NOS means genuine oem manufactures brand but some guys think it means anything that has been sitting on a parts shelf in a warehouse for a couple of years.

I agree with the check the sellers's feedback though.

Re: NOS parts thoughts

I would only buy from a seller who shows pictures of what is actually for sale. Why show the packaging in a picture of what is for sale if it isn't for sale? I think this threw a flag up for you and you should go with that gut feeling. Got a link since you're not bidding? Just kidding!

His pictures show the item with the box/package behind the item. How would you verify A/C fan switches, hood stops, and door handle gaskets if they are in open packages? I realize some things came in bulk packaging, but how about hood emblems? Why would you keep the box for that? Sad part is, some of the repro stuff has a part number on it so some people wouldn't know the difference.

Re: NOS parts thoughts

As many have said, do your research on the seller. There are many Dishonest/Unscrupulous EBay hacks out there.
I’m of the option that if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
If i can’t find the item I’m looking for in good usable condition, I like to be able to pick my stuff in person, even if I’m buying “High Quality” reproduction items.

Re: NOS parts thoughts

I purchased a part at a swap meet once. The guy offered to take off $100 if I didn't take the box. I wouldn't do it.
However, in your case an OEM part can almost always be identified. If you are comfortable with your research and the seller has good pictures and allows returns I might be tempted.

NO! Dude needs to "save" the box??? I got a box for ya! I would be suspect in the Flea Bay situation if I were getting an actual real part.

Re: NOS parts thoughts

Looks like most of you are in the same boat as me on this one. I wasn't considering bidding on any of it as i was skeptical anyhow, just struck me as odd how clear the seller is about no packaging included, but is in the pics.

Ironmike, that is the one.

Ironmike, that is the one.
The old guys that have been building this truck for 30 years can look at a part and tell if its nos or not like hood bumpers have 4 bumps

Depends, sometimes you can distinguish without need for part numbers. If it was say a door handle or crank I think I'd be very hesitant without idea who the seller is. If it was say weather-strip I'd probably run Fool me once....

Re: NOS parts thoughts

My thought is that if some of the aftermarket parts out there are so close to the originals that a person can't even tell the difference between the two, and the so called NOS is more costly...then why bother?

Suppose if it makes you feel better.
