big block swap question

Im gonna be swapping a 454 into my 70 3/4 ton 4x4 and i was wondering if a few things i have picked out would be good choices. From what i have i read on the site i can use 73 and up bb stands with a little bit of modification. correct? i have a 73 454 and the 73 mounts would make things easier.
I want this motor for low end torque and im thinking idle to 5500 rpms for the parts. Im thinking about rebuilding a quad 4 bbl carb or should i look for a new one? Im gonna leave the motor mostly stock right now but the stuff i buy i want to be able to use over after i decide to build it. Here's a couple things im looking at

I picked out this ignition kit is it a good choice?
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CMB-06-0029/

I was thinking about this intake but ill happily take other suggestions it says idle-5800 in the catalog
http://www.jegs.com/i/Weiand/925/801...oductId=746531

Ill be looking forward to your opinions
Thanks, Brandon

Re: big block swap question

I used the BB motor mounts and stands from a '74 when we put the '73 454 in my '71. Worked out good with the clutch setup and the headers I had.

Re: big block swap question

The '73-'87 motor mount stands from a C20 will fit your frame better than ones from a C10.

Re: big block swap question

I have been saving this article for years with the intention of building a 454, maybe it will meet your widh list.

Oval Up
This 454 package starts with a
dead-stock L-19 Goodwrench
454 replacement engine using
iron oval-port heads, 7.8:1
compression,a stock a-jet bolted
on an iron intake, and an HEI
distributor.Perhaps the wildest
parts of this whole package are
a set of Hedman1 3/4 inch headers for
a Camaro and a dual 2 1/2-
inch exhaust with an H-pipe
and a pair of Flowmaster mufflers.
In keeping with the
engine's low-tech image,Kevin
McClelland also used a Hi-Tech
Torque Booster flat-tappet
hydraulic cam (PN TBC1128).
The specs are 202/214 degrees
at 0.050-inch tappet lift with
0.468/0.493-inch lift using
stock 1.7:1rocker arms.
As you can see from the
power curve, this rascal can
peel the chrome right off the
trailer-hitch ball with 445 Ib-ft
of torque at 1,750 rpm and a
massive 493 Ib-ft at 3,250
rpm. True, this combo only
makes 343 hp at 4,250 rpm,
but for a dualie or a motor
home, this is hill-climbing
power that makes pulling a
trailer easy.Add an Edelbrock
Performer or Performer RPM
intake and a bigger carburetor
and it's possible to make
even more power. »
Power Curve
RPM TO HP
1,750 445 148
2,000 451 172
2,500 468 223
3,000 486 278
3,250 493 305
3,500 484 322
4,000 448 341
4,250 424 343
hp/ci = 0.755

It doesn't make much HP but it is strong....Good luck

Re: big block swap question

I would try your local wrecking yard, or craigslist. There aren't any difference between big block and small block with this style of mounts.....not that I've ever found.

Re: big block swap question

Since it is a 4x4, the mount issue does not apply.

Re: big block swap question

Somehow I missed that this is going into a 4x4

I'm not sure if the '73 and up mount brackets will bolt up to the crossmember in the '70. Anyone done that?

Re: big block swap question

The 4x4 crossmember/frame stands are a single unit. Since gm never installed a big block in the 68-72 4x4 trucks, there is no such thing as big block engine mounts. The big block will bolt to the small block crossmember just fine. In a 4x4 you will have to either "massage" the firewall, or move the engine forward for clearance.

Re: big block swap question

I really wanna use the 73 and up style motor mounts. Will these bolt onto the factory mount stands? Will i have to drill a couple holes to get them to work? I like the newer style mounts with the through bolt over the bolt through the back.
Im sorry for all the questions (some of which are stupid) but i want this to go a fluently as possible.

Thanks,
Brandon

Re: big block swap question

If you look at the crossmembers, you will see that they are of completely different designs. You may be able to swap the entire crossmember into your blazer, but not just the stands. If it was a 2wd, then you could just drill some holes and swap stands. I think the biggest thing would be to compare frame widths, and go from there. Good luck with your swap!

Re: big block swap question

I don't remember for sure, but I think that the '73 and up frames are taller than the '72 and earlier frames. If I am correct, the '73 and up mount brackets and possibly the crossmember will need to be modified to work in the '70 frame. I too prefer the '73 and up motor mounts, but it depends on how much work you are willing to do to get them in your truck.

Re: big block swap question

I was afraid it was going to take a lot of fab work to get the mounts to work but i would feel a lot safer with the newer style mounts to hold the torque of the big block. I think ill start with measuring the frames and go from there seeing how close they are to each other. If the frames are similar what would be the best way to get it lined up where it needs to be? Should i just slide the cross member in and bolt the mounts to the block then set it in and move the cross member accordingly? Then drill my holes from there? One other thing i found recently was the tubular mounts how do you guys feel about those and what part number would it be if they even make them for a 4x4? Sorry if I am re asking questions or stupid questions but i don't wanna start this and have to scramble for parts.

Thanks,
Brandon

Re: big block swap question

There are aftermarket 'tubular' motormounts for 4x4's but they aren't cheap, and not nesessarily something you need. Unless you're willing to splurge just for the cool factor. Here is the one from diy4x

http://diy4x.com/cart/index.php?rout...&product_id=80

There is another company that makes a similar one, but I don't remember their name ATM.

I would just do as you mentioned and do some comparison measuring and see what will be involved to convert to the later model mounts.

Re: big block swap question

Thanks so much Captainfab end everyone else for the replies ill try to get the newer style to fit and if i cant then ill just splurge and get the tubular one. In the future in gonna build the motor into a stroker and i wanna have the peace of mind knowing i wont twist it out of the mounts.

Thanks a bunch everyone,
Brandon
