1937 PU steering box rebuild?

How do you remove the retainer ring on the bottom side of this saginaw steering box? It's not threaded. See attached pics.

I'd guess there's a tool to fit in the 4 slots and crank it out.
You might take a drift and tap it to the left in one of the slots.

I built a spanner wrench for it, but it didn't work. It wasn't until after that I saw that it wasn't threaded.

I did tap on it with a flat head and a hammer, but the retainer ring galled really easy.

Post 1937 PU steering box Overhaul

It's been a really long time but there used to be a separate manual for Saginaw steering box service, maybe someone has a copy or you can find it on theoldcarmanualproject.com ? .
