Re: '69 C10 - Black on Black

Bedsides, cowl, and glovebox are painted. They came out pretty good, but I'm considering sanding and reapplying clear on the bedsides. I got a couple runs that are in bad spots on the bedsides and I don't have confidence that I can sand and buff them down and be happy with them and feel like there will be enough clear left on them.

The front bed panel and tubs are ready for the first application of primer - not far from being ready for paint! If all goes well in the next few weeks we will have the bed assembled.

Wow that is looking sharp. That black is going to pop when it’s all put together. Awesome!

Re: '69 C10 - Black on Black

We successfully modified the hood to make the gaps acceptable. By drilling out a few spot welds where the outer skin attaches to the rear brace, the outer skin easily moves. You can see that we pulled it out almost an inch. Then we bent the flange on the brace outwards to make contact with the skin and welded it back.

I also decided to sand down the bedsides and reclear. Too many imperfections that would need to be sanded and buffed. And a couple spots were on edges so I just sanded it down and will spray 3 more coats.

Yep, the original hood was too far gone. Or, at least, too much for our skillset.

Bodywork is a love/hate thing for me. Somedays I'm frustrated, other days I feel accomplished. But when it's something you only do as a hobby, the learning curve is steep. But I'm constantly improving my techniques and learning.

Re: '69 C10 - Black on Black

It finally looks like a truck. We have the bed all put together and the hood is on. After putting the hood on the first time after painting, we discovered that the skin needed to be stretched away from the brace at the other back corner and ended up repainting it because of it. I want to let the clear cure a little longer before applying the tailgate letters.

Just need to put the windshield and back glass in it, install the seat, do a little wiring and top off the fluids and it should be on the road. That, and a couple days of cutting and buffing. Apparently I reached the pinnacle of my spraying technique on my last truck as this one has been a struggle getting a satisfactory finish straight off the gun.

Very nice work!
Huge amount of progress in a short amount of time.
Sorting out the fit on the hood is great to see , I took note of how the rear brace and hood skin needed to be separated , pulled out, and welded back.

Thanks guys. I'm definitely my hardest critic.

Forgot to mention this, but the bed went together very nicely. It was a lot of work getting the factory sheet metal straight, but it all lines up so well. No hole stretching, cutting, or welding.

Re: '69 C10 - Black on Black

I had a few hours yesterday to work on the truck. We decided to try our hand at glass install and it wasn't too bad. We tried 3 or 4 times on the windshield before finding a technique that worked for us. We had been trying to get the top edge and corners in as far as we could upon setting the glass in the opening and then pushing the bottom in and starting with pulling the string there, but we couldn't even get the rubber to contact the pinch weld when we approached it that way. So on the last and successful attempt we just set the glass flat in the opening and started at the bottom middle, pulling about 10" at a time and alternating directions and eventually got it. It was a bit of a struggle to get the upper corners in, some patience and a windshield stick got us there. We used soapy water on the first try but it really didn't help. The back window went in on the first try.

So for anyone out there considering doing it, you just need two people, small rope, and some patience. We saved $200 doing it ourselves but we also spared the hassle of trailering it to the glass shop on a weekday and learned a new skill.

So close. But yes, we will be selling this one. It's just a hobby for us and we don't need another one of this body style.

Re: '69 C10 - Black on Black

We have a runner! A couple weeks ago we filled the fluids, installed the seat, and took it on its maiden voyage. The Flowmaster mufflers we put on sound much better than the glasspacks it came with, the rear gear swap improved the driving experience significantly, and everything works. As difficult as it is to make a black paint job look good, we're glad we went with black. Also happy with the choice in seat cover - it really looks great in the cab and finishes off the truck.

We installed a temperature switch in the driver side head to serve as a ground trigger for the fans and it works great. The fans come on when they're supposed to and it cools down quick with the 4-core radiator and dual fans.

At this point, we have some imperfections in the clear coat to fix and apply the tailgate letters and do some more test driving and it will be ready for a new owner in the next month or so.
