I used to live at the base of the mountain the AT is on. There is a spur trail down a side hollow with a shelter near the bottom. My girlfriend, the dog, and I would hike up to the shelter for a cookout. One time a group that had reserved the shelter came hiking down while we had steaks on the fire. We apologized for being squatters and they were fine with it. They found it an interesting encounter. We all got a little steak and for them that was a lot!. I think I had beer, enough that we all could have one. I guess she and I were a sort of support crew for them

Just got a update from my brother. He's at 1800 miles or so. Looks like he's doing well.

Excellent. I found out the hard way that having a foot of your large intestine removed makes staying hydrated that much harder. Means I have to hike in cooler/wetter weather.

That's awesome! The closest I ever got to doing a hike like that, was reading this Bill Bryson book. Hilarious!

Re: Walking the Pacific Coast trail

a family member in here 70s walked that one (in 2018) almost all the way to Canadian border, a day or 2 from reaching the border the snow and cold weather made here stop. She did not take winter cloths with here in April when she started at the Mexican border. She loved it!

Re: Walking the Pacific Coast trail

Good on your brother, I don’t know him but I sure admire him. I was the fire guard at Olallie lake Oregon in 1967, a few PCT hikers stopped in for a visit while I was there, and sometimes I encountered them on my rounds. Some were really loaded down and others travelled very lightly. I encountered a couple with their saddle horses and pack horse, they had enough gear to make their camp very comfortable. Sure had some interesting conversations. I would love to do it horseback, but I think I’m a little past my prime now.
