We once got in a brand new pickup that was "Chevrolet" on one side and "GMC" on the other.

Sounds like Herb should of caught that mistake and run the pickup down the fix it line,,
Wonder if the holes for the badges were in the same place on both sides ?

I brought it back downtown from the storage yard where the transport unloaded, and pointed out the difference to the new car setup department. I wonder if anyone else would have noticed before it was sold?

No - they came down the same line as the "normal" vehicles.

About one out of every 12 vehicles was a military job.

I was the production supervisor for the Fender Set area at that time.

Re: Factory Pictures

Cool old pictures. I love the one with the '50's GMC Trucks. The men are wearing everyday coveralls, bibs and flannel shirts.

What's that instrument that one old man is looking at? A scale? Why would you need to weigh them after assembly?

Re: Factory Pictures

Are they running-in the engines in that last pic? Looks like the cooling lines are all piped in.

Yes - that is the "hot test".

Engines are run on propane or natural gas for break in and to verify function before shipping to the final assembly plant.

Normally the body is dropped separately, and then the front clip installed (either piecemeal or buck built).

I can't imagine how much harder the technique shown here makes things.

Re: Factory Pictures

These aren't actually "factory" pictures, but non-the-less cool pictures from back in the day.
