Inverted air cleaner base.

Has anyone tried one of these? On engine masters they used a salad bole as an air cleaner base and it worked better than any of the other air cleaner types.

Re: Inverted air cleaner base.

I have used the velocity stacks before, and they really helped. Along with typical raised base air cleaners. So my feeling is that would work quite well.

Remember to the episode they used a what 650hp motor to test airflow restrictions. So depending on how much HP you make, and how much room you have. Look at the graphs they have to determine what air cleaner diverges from your ideal power graph.

But also a typical raised base with the filter top was the most ideal cheap fits almost everything option.

Re: Inverted air cleaner base.

Right now my base is the kind that is supposed to allow the filter to sit lower on the carb but I have to use a spacer to get it to fit. I am sure that is a restriction.

I am also thinking of getting some kind of carb spacer sense I have seen that help when they tested them. That is if it all fits under the hood.

Right now It looks like it might all fit. That is if the filter clears the trans tunnel. Maybe I will do a aluminum foil test.

Re: Inverted air cleaner base.

I use this spacer on my Eddy and it virtually cured the hot start percolation problem that aluminum carbs are known for. 4 hole spacers are supposed to improve low end torque too and my 283 needs that. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/s...gaAsx9EALw_wcB

It is quite a restriction especially since you have that nice aluminum top. It looks to me like the lower plate you posted will solve your problem, and add a few hp along the way.

Carb spacers are all over the map when it comes down to individual combos. Just like grinding out the plenum on a dual plane.

Some times it really works, and sometimes it hurts.

Engine masters a few episodes back put a 4 hole under a Magnum 360, and it dominated the open plenum. But I havenseen the reverse true in other published tests.

Personally on my 1994 LT1 I am re-installing in my truck. The plenum I'd ground out, and I have a 1" open spacer. I can only go by the feelings I have of driving it, and what little observations I can make.

It didn't hurt power, but I don't think it helped either. My AFR seem more stable, and easier to fine tune if you will. Plus highway mpg went up do to more stable AFR, and being able to get closer to 14.7. Before in steady state cruising I could have a 1 ratio variance at 3000rpm at 75mph. Then after the spacer, and plenum mod. It seemed to be a .3 to .5 variance alot more often. Along with being less peaky on the high side. Which allowed me to take 1 more jet out, and get decent mpg. Considering it wasn't a requirement when I builtvthe truck. Mind you it is a carb and I don't not have a cruise control module.

Re: Inverted air cleaner base.

What brand/model of intake manifold do you have Forest?

Re: Inverted air cleaner base.

I don’t recall the brand right now but it is almost the same casting as an edelbrock performer rpm. It is a dual plain. It is not a high rise and is not an air gap.

Here’s a better photo. Ignore that photo that is a different intake. That was an old one

Just to clarify it’s the first photo that I posted. The second on is the wrong one

I was referring to the 2nd pic. With the bright aluminum valve covers

Re: Inverted air cleaner base.

I was just wondering if you were planning on using a square bore carb on a spreadbore manifold. Lots of people do, but I dont. I prefer them to be the same pattern and work together without special adapters.

Re: Inverted air cleaner base.

So the edelbrock is a square bore and my manifold is a spread bore. So I probably will need an adapter. I would really like to use my quodrojet but we can’t seem to get it to work with the 700r4.

I got you. I was just clarifying which picture for the sake of the manifold.

They are nice looking valve covers when polished but I hate polishing. I also wanted something in black.

Re: Inverted air cleaner base.

I just pieced together what I had around the shop and used a tall air filter to get better breathing. Seems to work ok for me. I'm not sure if the base in inverted or not or if the base went with the top cover. I was at the end of my brief hot rodding career and had a few left over parts.
Oh, the motor is all factory L31-R inside including the cam.
