250 valve adjustment

What is the best way to adjust valves on a 250 straight 6? I am rebuilding this engine. I have read several ways on line. What do you guys do?

Re: 250 valve adjustment

Depends on the situation.

If the engine is on a build stand and has not been started, i bolt a degree wheel to the balancer and index it for TDC on compression on cyl 1. Set the clearance on cyl 1 by tightening the center rocker nut to remove all free play, then turn down 1/4 more. Turn the engine in normal rotation 120 degrees and repeat, this time setting cyl 5.

Following the firing order of 1,5,3,6,2,4 and turning the crank 120 degrees each time you can accurately set the valves.

Sometimes you will need to go back thru the process once the engine has been warmed up.

If the engine has been installed and started, the valve clearances should be set with the engine running, each rocker nut should be backed off until the valve clearance "clacks", then the nut should be turned down 1/4 turn.
