Washer pump not working

I got Classic Parts' Universal windshield washer. Got all new lines, and nozzles aren't clogged. I built a bracket to put the pump at the stock location, but it just doesn't have enough power to get washer fluid up to the windshield I even primed it! Oh yeah, sometimes smoke comes out of the nozzles...

What the heck is going on here? Almost sounds like a faulty pump from the get-go.

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Re: Washer pump not working

A washer pump should easily shoot liquid several feet.

Are you sure that's smoke and not vapor coming out?

Re: Washer pump not working

Well, it seems like smoke because it just kind of looms around, that's the best I can describe it. It shouldn't matter that it's in the stock location, should it?

Re: Washer pump not working

I ordered this pump this morning, http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Universa...c99c8e&vxp=mtr

$5.99 with free shipping, figured what the heck worth a try, I will let you know how it goes and if it works worth a poop..

You even primed yours, doesn't make sense that it isn't spraying, did it smoke before or after you primed it? wondering if it burned up before you tried priming

Was it new or good hose leading back to the tank or old one with hidden cracks and pinholes maybe and you lost suction?

Re: Washer pump not working

Started smoking after it was primed. I pulled the lines off, and they're full of fluid. However that still doesn't explain the smoke.

Re: Washer pump not working

How do you have it wired, and how is it switched, and where is the reservoir?,,

Re: Washer pump not working

Can't help with your specific problem but I can offer an alternative. Reservoir from a mid nineties C/K, it has a built in pump, cost about $5 bucks with pump at my local pick a part. Just wire it into the original washer harness. Replacement pumps are readily available at your local DIY auto parts store. I, like many others, got tired of fighting that old washer system. This is a great mod that is very easy to do. Lee

Wired to stock switch. Positive to yellow terminal, and negative to dark blue terminal. Reservoir is stock (I really would like to keep it that way), and I put all new hoses on. I know it's primed because when I blow air through the little hole in the cap, washer fluid comes out of the nozzles.

this might interest you.

.............http://www.ehow.com/video_4874558_tr...sher-pump.html

The switch has no hot wires on it they are all grounds. I think you meant that you connected the positive on the pump to the yellow wire on the wiper motor and the negative on the pump to the dark blue on the motor.

Re: Washer pump not working

Well I bench tested the pump, and it only shot fluid out about an inch. So it's bad then?

Well, if a pump that normally shoots liquid multiple feet is squirting liquid about an inch...I'd say it was bad.

Hey Andy, I have not tried out my $5.99 pump yet, I went to try it and the suction line that goes into the washer fluid tank broke off (very old) So I have to get a new cap piece with the line for my tank.

I will try to bench test it today and let you know what happens.

Re: Washer pump not working

You could use a pond pump... with good nozzels it would be like a car wash (would have to have a big resevoir! lol)

ok... just kidding...

Re: Washer pump not working

I had a chance to bench test my $5.99 special. It worked great. For the test I added a short piece of hose to both the in and out, just stuck suction end into a container of water pointed the out line away from me and using two test wires, one to positive, one to negative on the battery. As soon as I touched the wire to the battery the pump kicked on and squirted a couple feet, I then pinched the rubber hose a little to replicate the windshield spray nozzle and it sprayed great.

How long will the $5.99 pump last......only time will tell.

Re: Washer pump not working

Great to hear that it worked out for you. I'll try another from Classic Parts, if that doesn't work then I'll definitely look into the $5.99 one. I can't put my dash back together until I get this washer pump sorted out.

Re: Washer pump not working

Read the pump instructions today, and realized I had it upside down...

Flipped it around and it's still a no-go...

I think the pump is definitely bad now.
