Evaporator box repair

Hi. I'm new to the site. I'm trying to repair the evaporator box on my '71 Cheyenne. The metal panel on the back of the box is rusted and I need to replace it. The box itself is good, so I was hoping to repair it instead of buying a new box. If anyone knows where I could find one I would appreciate it. Thanks. Tommy

Welcome, the metal piece is not replicated to my knowledge. You will need to source a used one. If you become a supporting member you can place a "Want to Buy" on the parts forum. IMO, this is your best bet unless you can find one in a bone yard.

BTW, we all like picks of trucks, post yours up if you can.

Re: Evaporator box repair

Your best bet is to find another box. Way cheaper than trying to repair that one.

What he said. Every now and again something comes up. Keep all your parts of course, little retainers and hardware, everything and get a replacement too. If you're hoping to use the air door in what you have I imagine yours is rusted to a crisp.

Re: Evaporator box repair

If you post some pics I will compare them to one I have out of a '67.

Attached pics...Door doesn't shut all the way, maybe from rust? And there is a hole and lots of rust in the metal piece.

Re: Evaporator box repair

You could probably restore that if you wanted to. It matters how much of it is surface rust and how much is actually rusted through. On mine I had some parts of it rusted through and I fixed it. I recommend give my thread a read and see if it helps you. https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...06#post8704506

Re: Evaporator box repair

That's awesome! I think it will help alot! Thank you very much! I think I'll drill out the rivets this weekend and see what I can fix.

Re: Evaporator box repair

Yes, good. You'll know more about it once you get it apart and perhaps use a wire wheel on the rusty areas. If it's really bad rust but only in a couple of places, clean it up, patch, and paint it. I decided to go with small stainless steel screws and nyloc nuts to put mine back together. The short rubber hose that goes from the fan motor to the housing to help cool the motor is not reproduced and mine was cracked. I used superglue to fix the crack and smoothed on a coating of black RTV over the crack and it came out pretty great.
