Re: Button on dashboard

I’m curious now. Can you show us a little closer pic? I’m sure we can figure it out.

Re: Button on dashboard

It might make it easier to see what's going on if you remove the assembly from the dash. The housing collar behind the dash unscrews simply by twisting it, and then the lighter and socket will come out of the dash.

Since there are two wires going to your cigarette lighter, there's a possibility it is back-lit like the one shown here.

I will give that a shot when I'm at the shop tomorrow. It did not look like a cigarette lighter to me and it still doesn't but the picture that you sent the attachment of kind of looks like it. So I'll dig more into it. Thank you whole thing makes me feel kind of dumb considering how long I've been doing this

The one in the picture I sent is a 1967-specific lighter (smaller with ridges around perimeter), whereas yours is a 68-72 style (larger and smooth).

Okay that's good to know. There's a few things on the inside of my truck that I've been told are 72... Steering column being one of them. I built 55 to 59 Chevy trucks for 40 years I've owned three cameos. And this is my first foray and the 67 to 72 so I am very much a novice at some of the little things like this. So I appreciate your help

ToonMan,
I apologize. Since it looked like a cigarette lighter and in the lighter location I made an assumption that I should not have.

One thing for certain, you got a bunch of us interested to know what it is now. Pulling it out of the dash and tracing wires won't be fun but should be enlightening. Would be neat to know if a PO had repurposed the location for a switch of some sort.

Re: Button on dashboard

I guess I should apologize too. I assumed that you knew that it was in the location of the Standard cigarette lighter, but you never mentioned cigarette lighter in your first post.
Do keep in mind that the cigarette lighter in the Custom deluxe and higher trimmed models were designed to match the radio and dash controls. I can’t imagine what aftermarket gadget would do the same.

You mention that it comes back on a spring and doesn’t come all the way out? The custom deluxe lighter is designed so only the billet portion pushes in and pops out. Then you pull the black outer ring to remove it ( again, Im assuming you know this but I’m just stating just in case). I’ve seen where the lighter housing has physically either rusted in place or somehow fused itself into the receptacle. Could this be the case?

Re: Button on dashboard

i have seen the cigar lighter so rusted together that it would only push the coil to the power and not come out of the dash take a pic of the part on the back side of the dash

Hey, last week both my brake lights and turn signals were out. Instead of checking the bulbs, I diagnosed everything under the dash first, only to find out it was the bulbs.

Talk about feeling dumb.

Never thought of that (kill switch). If my truck was worth stealing this would be a good idea. Haven't even tried my lighter to see if it works.

Re: Button on dashboard

Does your windshield washer squirter button work? Just a guess.

Instead of repairing those switches a lot of people install another switch. It is the only pushbutton switch on the dash that I can think of.

Re: Button on dashboard

At first glance it does look like a lighter but different no trim bezel. What’s the back look like? Just replaced mine last week I had to tap all over the damn thing to take it apart

I had a '67 a few years back, and it didn't have a trim bezel. Dashes for 68-72 have an indentation around the lighter hole where the bezel fits, but 67 dashes are just flat there.

Re: Button on dashboard

Also, there is a 1967 specific lighter. It has a ridged edge. Looks like this.

That’s actually fantastic. Not the feeling dumb part. Now we can all go and obsess over something else.

Don't feel bad, your question had us all thinking. It is a strange design. I'm glad it works.....
